Differential Question

Im looking to upgrade my rear end since its only 2wd well um 1wd lmao.
I've already put a two inch lift on thanks to OME coils and new bilistein shocks. I know its only RWD but i plan on keeping it and supercharging and making it more capable. Anyway i'm currently at a 4.10 should I go up to a 4.56 or 4.88? And if so would anyone recommend a detroit truetrac?

Tire size dictates gear ratio. You want the RPMs to be in the range that creates power and that depends on how many rotations your tires are turning per mile. You also don't want the engine redlining when going down the road at 55mph.

You'll be fine with 4.10's

As for the part-time locker I don't know if I recommend it for you. You shouldn't be doing any hardcore wheeling with it being 2wd anyways. The occasional offroading you probably do likely doesn't warrant needing one. Get it looking the way you want and save your money. Then once you have enough saved up, sell your 2wd and use what all you saved as well to buy a 4wd rig if you want to do challenging offroading.

That's the best advice I can give ya!

My advise is to sell it now before you put any money into it & buy a 4WD. It's hard enough to sell a RWD & if you mod it you'll never get that money back.

I see what you guys are saying, but I've already fallen in love with my T4R. I'm not planning on getting any sort or return on it. I've already dropped money on the sound system, suspension, new tires, engine maintenance, Plus i spent a good 8 hours polishing it in my garage, also a cb antenna bracket since I got a radio for free from work, changed most the vacuum lines, and already have money saved up for the supercharger lol. I'm kind of planning on holding on to this. I already know I wont be able to go rock crawling, or mudding.

even though you did a lift, you could turn it into a sport runner. lower it back down with some tighter suspension, and with that supercharger and LSD you would have a sweet street car

What size tires? That will determine the gear ratio needed. And if you want to make your 2wd slightly more capable I would suggest maybe getting a used rear axle housing and diff with the Elocker. With a 2” lift I assume you only went up to a 32” tire and you can get the elocker stock with 4.30 gears. Just a thought

Hmmm that looks pretty good. I'll actually keep that in mind. Once I get the supercharger in then i'll decide if I want to go in that direction.
Besides that I do have a 4wd truck and taken it on some trails but never needed to put it in 4WD.
I've had the 4runner for about 9 months and been doing upgrades and mods to it.

The OME coils and shocks gave it lift, the tires I put on currently are Cooper AT3
Tire size i'm not completely sure with since I plan on changing the rims to the 6 spoke 17 inch TRD rims

Ratio depends on tire size. 33's I'd go 4.88. I'd get a trutrac LSD. More useful for a 2WD. Hate to say it, but I have a 2WD and two 4WDs. The 2WD just has no chance compared to a 4WD. It does drive a lot nicer on the road so it has that advantage. If you're trying to off road, you need low range. Otherwise you'll just overheat the hell out of your transmission.

Well I'm not really trying to do heavy offroading in it. I know it 2wd drive and I can accept that, just trying to give it more capability to go on trails, dirt or gravel roads.

I'm on 33's with stock 4.10 gears and have no issue going anywhere. a 2wd with LSD would be fun to play with in mild mud/dirt.

Yeah I'm not looking to do anything crazy. Mainly going on dirt/gravel roads in dry conditions with my buddy if he wants to and not having to worry about getting bogged down. Like I said I've fallen in love with my 4runner, I wanted a 4x4 but all the ones the were 4wd where out of my price range and I needed a vehicle to get to work since someone hit the side of my new truck and I was stuck without a vehicle for a month and a half. Got a sport/highlander edition and just loved it. I love my new truck but my little 4runner just has character to it.

Everybody always goes straight to sell it and buy a 4x4. At the moment though, parts are plentiful, and with these older rigs not much has to be done besides some wrenching, so I say start reading up on a 4x4 conversion. Tranny, front diff, axles, spindles, driveshafts and you're set. With some hunting it's perfectly feasible that you could do it for 500$ in parts. That will give you more capability than any traction device or gearing in a 2wd.

Honestly this is what I was genuinely thinking of doing. I read all COBs thread and it gave motivation with my 2WD 4runner. I was thinking of a donor 4WD 4runner down the line to do the conversion. I mean as of now I'm not rushing to do the conversion, Just taking steps to improve the ride, drive ability, and maintenance on it. I already have half saved up for the supercharger, and want to get it geared then install the supercharger myself by fall/winter.

It's not difficult. If you know how to swap out a tranny you're set basically. The only part you have to figure out is how you want to change up the tranny mount. I've seen them moved forward to the 4wd spot and we flipped mine and welded a plate on to catch it further forward while keeping the frame mounts in the same spot.

I went UTI a couple years ago and actually removed and replaced a transmission. I mean it was a manual but still wasn't too hard, My only concern is the wiring, I mean I have some skill in electrical and reading a wiring harness.
I remember reading in COB's thread that they mount up further also if im correct.

Assuming your 4runner is automatic, I'd think the wire harnesses for the transmission would be long enough to be re-routed and plugged in. The only wire harness added using a J shift transfer case would be the 4x4 light switch, not needed at all really.

I did zero wiring and plumbing on my swap, but I have a manual trans, j shift tcase and manual hubs up front instead of ADD.
