Dimensions of empty space below the radio?

I am looking at installing a ham radio unit in my runner and need to know the dimensions underneath the radio. Most units are 6-7.5 inches in depth and I would like to know if they would fit under the radio in place of the little tray there. Any help is appreciated

Sorry I cant resist. I assume you have access to your truck? How about a tape measure? 99.99% of us would not know that off the top of our head. We would have to go measure to answer your question.

I was wondering about the measurements without the tray. I would have to take the whole center console apart to measure with a "tape measure". Just put the question out there to others that might have installed a radio or something under their stereo and knew the dimensions of the space or the dimensions of the unit they put in. It's fine if no one wants to answer but don't tell me to use a tape measure, I am not stupid. Just trying to save some time From taking my whole console apart to measure it.

I have an Yaesu FT-2900 in mine in the space under the radio. It is probably 7-8" deep and fits fine. The factory radio has an amplifier mounted about that location but if you have an aftermarket radio you can remove the amp for more room. I think my Yaesu would fit even with the factory amp there.

Thank you sir! That was one of the radios I was considering. Does it get too hot in that little space or has it been fine for you??

I don't transmit on it much at all. It is for emergencies and listening. (I'm not really an active ham anymore - no reason, just lazy I guess.) I think there is plenty of ventilation for it and it has a huge heat sink so it should dissipate the heat fine, though reviews on eham say it has problems dissipating the heat at 75W when transmitting for long periods. There is a lot of free space and it is pretty open behind the console. The only drawback to this radio, and I have read this on other forums, is that it has terrible spurious signal rejection. I use it mostly to listen to sheriff and fire calls, and storm chasers, when I'm out and it will pick up every drive-thru headset or business mobile repeater in a quarter mile - just enough to cause the scanning to stop and get a bunch of static. I had an FT-8800 and it didn't have any problems with spurious signals. Guys say if you just use it on ham bands without scanning it works great - it does do what it's made for just fine. It is definitely a good value for the money.

I'm guessing there is room for 8-9" of radio behind the face plate.
