Dinoc woodgrain dash attempt

Okay, so my brother and I are sick and tired of our silver dash materials (scratch magnets) so we decided to buy a buttload of 3M Dinoc in birds eye maple to cover all of our silver with!

We worked for hours to cover these three parts, and I am sad to report its too much work and too problem prone for the complex shapes of our silver pieces. Here are some pictures from a distance.

We worked for a long time, and I know some people are better at this than others....but we won't be trying again. We are going to go for hydrographic dash printing now. These are pics from my brothers SR5. Simpler surfaces like my iPad look incredible however.

Darker wood might have worked a little better,the light stands out too much and doesn't fit the interior look very well. Why not something like faux carbon fiber or just something that looked like a more modern surface would blend better IMO.
 
Actually, if you had the tan interior, I think it would look pretty good.

You're brave for taking that on. Wait til you attempt the radio.
 
Did you take the panels off to wrap them or leave them on? I have to agree with Duc; I think a darker wood in a satin finish like the newer Land Rovers would be kinda cool. Practice makes perfect, man. Keep it up!

The 3rd gen limited had woodgrain and it was a lovely touch. I don't know why the newer ones don't to be honest, l love woodgrain in any car. Our cars are a sea of silver crapola.

Ya we chose the wrong color for sure :shrug:, we went based on pictures on a website and kinda blew it this wood is almost peach colored and way too light. The issue is in the amount of stretching you have to do, a wood with straight lines in its grain looks ridiculous so quickly. They do have matte finishes, and I should have got one.

I did take the panels off to wrap them and they took an absolute eternity to do. I hate our silver trim so much, but I don't think I hate anything enough to continue his journey hahaha

Maybe you can wait for the 2014 to come out and be the first to do an interior trim swap :naughty:

Check out CARID.com. They have all kinds of dash kit and interior kits for 5th Gens. I've seen some good kits and a few bad ones for other cars but the best thing is to call and discuss with them. Most of the times they are pretty straight shooters. Some of the kits have 3D parts for the very curved areas but most are just 2D. The pieces are very precision cut to fit so that's half the battle. I think the 4Runner kits are 2D only but I'm not sure. I've never installed them myself but I saw an Acura done by a very anal girl with absolutely no prior experience (at doing car work) and it was like it came from the factory.
Was hoping someone else would order a set and report. I just want a few pieces to cover up some of the shiny stuff and some of the hard black plastic areas.
 
I think it looks good! and very different, you are the only one with that 'cool' trim. I like it, kudos to you for taking on such a project.

I have bookmarked both and will be visiting these sites once the little one has grown up and destroyed the trim. It will be time for new trim at that point!

I'm gonna tell you that I would be skeptical of the CarID kits. I haven't read many positive reviews either. I did a kit like that about 6 years ago on a VW Golf and it was so obviously aftermarket it hurt. I am trying for a real factory looking option, hydrographics are next. I did do one thing worthwhile with my dinoc though....

I would suggest that you buy the parts that you want done and have them painted the way you want. I had my dash and various other parts done this way by Specialty Graphix in Florida. They can do just about anything you want as long as the part can be dipped in water. I have seen Real Tree camo, just about any color of carbon you could ever want, and too many wood grains and color shades to say here. I want to have them do my 4R silver parts in a dark burled wood and the black parts done in a dark carbon. I have attached a couple pictures of my bike before and after. I will never do the cheap looking after market peel and stick after the great work they have done on my bike.
