So what does it take to smog a V8 swap in California. I would love to do this, but don't have the skills or time unfortunately and would be worried about smog.

As far as I know, as long as the components are from your year or newer, code bank is clear, and stock airbox (or CA-certified K&N) you should be completely fine. Don't take my word for it though.

I'm tempted to do this and have been bugging Trevor about it for a while.

Just read through your build. Saw that you have the v8 running via YouTube. Any other updates? I definitely would like to know more about the wiring as well as the trans. Did you have to swap internals because you bought a 2wd tranny?

It's been a while since I've been on here and your questions are simple, I swapped the entire harness from the tundra I had to the 4Runner, body harness and all, and I had to swap the output shaft from the 4wd tranny to the 2wd tranny.

So I'm back and to answer your question Brian, no it is still 4wd. :lever:

I'll have some updates as soon as I get home, but for now some information, I just got back from deployment after a long and back breaking 7 months on a ship, my wife and I have had a child, so he will be getting the most attention for the time being, I've got plans to restore my 4Runner after i got it back, I made a mistake selling it but I was able to buy it back. It was a buddy of mine that had it but if anything he only fixed it and made it better for me haha. I will be cutting off the bumpers he made for it though. Here's a quick pic of how she sits now

A very subtle reminder to everyone that I'm still here just been lurking around mostly. I am recovering from two fractured Elbows and hopefully will be posting a little more than I have been on the forum. I installed an ARB bumper and I've been rewiring a lot of electrical stuffs on the 4runner.

So as everyone knows, I V8 swapped this thing. recapping on that, I feel like it has plenty of power, and I want to focus on getting more things squared away as far as the little things go. some how I developed a leak in the tranny along the way and the power steering now leaks like an old dog. I want to make this thing back to being my champ. I still daily drive it, but I go through ATF like a MF. so that's the extent of the update. I also plan on getting another CBI rear bumper for it since I'm not impressed by the current bumper I have. other than that ive just been busy with family and work. hardly any time to work on this thing other than shooting guns and whatnot. many updates to come soon. so stay tuned! :boxer:

Hello forum, got some updates for you. Been rolling around and busy with work but I bought another 4runner for my wife and she loves it. I surprised her with a roof top tent on a custom rack for it! Now both of us have 4runners! Anyways pictures a worth 1000

As promised here is a video of the 98' yeah I know the drone almost hit the wire but at least it was an "almost" and not a collision haha. Not sure how the quality will be but I know the drone recorded it in 4K @30fps

Third question... Why are you going through ATF like that. It doesn't evaporate so where is it going.

Brian! Nice to hear from you! Yes the v8 is running, right. Is I’m waiting till my wife and I get settled into our new house before I do much else. Need to clean out the garage after that move haha. I’m going through ATF because I got a leak somewhere between my transfer case and the transmission itself. Again, I’d like to take it off and reseal it but my garage need care first haha.

I don't usually interject on someone else's thread but I will here. It is a bad bad idea to run 33s on a stock suspension height, especially without a BL. The largest tire you can safely run on a stock suspension is 265x75x16 which is a 31.5". Also it is always good to keep in mind that you want the wheel to fit without rubbing while driving around town and while on the trail. That is why 265x75x16 is largest tire you can safely run without a lift.

I did do that but only because my tires were bald and I was making a road trip to Texas. I wouldn’t recommend doing it.

So I did a thing this weekend. More or less had to stop once I got everything buttoned up with the exception of my tires being mounted. But I did the manual locking hub conversion. Didn’t want to deal with the electronics on the 4wd so just stuck to the manual hubs. Pretty straight forward. Also stuck the spindle gussets on from total chaos along with the SPC upper control arms. Here’s some pics.









I did actually get everything bolted on contrary to the pictures showing it being incomplete but I will take pics when it’s completed!
