disabling the rear window roll down key on the remote

this has happened twice so far since i bought it a month ago. i've come out from a long days work only to notice that my rear window is completely rolled down. ive determined that when i put my keys in my pocket, sometimes i accidently hit the key that rolls down the window without noticing. this poses a problem being that i have a subwoofer, amp, and thousands of dollars of t-mobile property in there for work.

is there any way to disable the key on the remote so this doesnt happen again?

You must really be hitting it against something. The button for the roll down on the remote needs to be held for a couple seconds for the window to actually go down. I've never done a count so it may be as little as a second (which is still quite a decent amount of time) but its unlikely that its being held that long on anything in your pocket. That and theres a beep when it rolls down. so hold button, do a one count, then Beep, then window goes down.

Edit: Actually what I just said applies to the 05 models, I dont know about the '99 models. I would hope it worked the same...

The 4gen has a lockout button to keep that from happening. Does the 99 have such a feature. The button is located next to all the window controls in the drivers door. It also locks out the use of the other door windows.

This happens to me all the time.It is very annoying .I took the remote apart and ground the window button down so it effectively disables it.Of course it no longer works but this is better than coming out on a rainy day and finding your rear window down.

great solution. but there's a remote for rolling down the rear window in the cargo area? never knew that. if i want to roll the window, i just stick my keys and turn it. hmm!!

seems like that's a feature that something like '00 and up models got. my mom's got a '98 4Runner and it doesn't have that, but my '02 has the remote button there.

It happens to me alot too. What a pita to come out from shopping and find your window down. Now I double, triple check the window after parking, because it gets me paranoid.

I think I'm hitting the lock button on the remote with the clicker upside down and when I don't hear the beep, I absentmindly click a different button which locks the doors. Meanwhile the window is down.

i've had the same problem and the solution was easy, however silly. the window roll down button is closest to the key chain ring so when you stick the remote and keys in your pocket what is most likely happening is that a key (most likely the one closest to the remote) is pushed against the window roll down button due to the tightness of the pants pocket. i'm guessing that this is a problem that happens more to guys b/c gals stick their keys in a purse. the solution was to rearrange my keys on the key chain so that when the keys rolled over, the closest key was too large impact.

The problem is with a software bug and not the remote. There's a TSB about it on the Toyota Service site. I may have it somewhere as a pdf file, but I'd have to look for it... It's a known issue with '99 and '00 4runners. It's about $300 to fix, out of warranty, (dealer) because you have to replace the board behind the dash and I believe a control board in the rear door... If anyone wants the TSB email me and I'll see if I can find it.

Sonova! I kept blaming the wife for letting the kids play with her keys, but she stopped and I saw the window on my 2000 down this morning, and alot of rain got into the tailgate. Hopefully the motor doesn't rust out.

It makes sense that it's a software bug cuz I've always suspected it wasn't the kids and especially rare for them to actually hold the button down for 1 second.

Ok, so solution for me would be to unplug the back window motor, but I saw mention somewhere that there might be a fuse for it?

Does the back motor have a reasonably easy access to unplug the motor? Fuse would be better, tho.

No to both. Fuse (30A POWER) will disable all windows plus wipers, door locks, sunroof and seats. Access to the motor requires pulling handle and then the inside panel off the liftgate, and then I am not sure how easy it is to access the motor plug. In any case, a non-trivial exercise.

A quick glance at the circuit diagram tells me the lock-out button will only disable the dash switch, not the remote or the key switch.

Grinding the remote button is really the best solution. Although re-arranging, or changing, the keyring may work. I had the issue years ago, and I switched keyrings when I was given a new one as a present, and it never happened again.

EDIT: I just looked at my key ring. Next to the fob I have my plastic tab that gets me into the Town dump. It's almost the same size as the fob and serves like a little plastic cover for the buttons. If you have a supermarket tag or anything like that you might try putting it on the button side of the fob. Might work.

Well, i went ahead and removed the plastic tailgate panel to expose the wiring. The smallest wire plug (1 large blue and 2 smaller wires) I unplugged and it disabled the motor completely. I guess I got it right the first time cuz that solved the problem. I just need to plug that in whenever I want to roll the window down - which is only a couple times a year. Only inconvenience is having the plastic panel removed. I might cut a hole a hole or something. It's only once screw to remove the panel, though.

My vehicle happens to be one that requires both the ECU and the keyfobs to be replaced to fix this problem, so total cost would be upwards of $500 CAD I'm sure. I'm happy with my fix.

Simple fix to rear window roll down problem.

Like many others, I have been dealing with the problem of my 2000 4Runner Limited's remote opening my rear window unexpectedly at the worst possible times while in my pocket, even with the window 'lock' on. Finally got tired of mopping out gallons of rain water from the cargo area, gave up and took my remote off my ignition key where it's sat in a drawer for the past twelve years. I found this remote shell on Amazon for $6, just have to take the guts out of your old remote and put them in this one that has no rear window button on it, works perfectly! As simple as replacing your remotes battery.

I'm curious how you get such good range on your remote. Once I'm about 50 feet away it doesn't work. So I don't really have this problem. But it is a problem I wouldn't mind having. Always hated the range on these.
