Disengaging 4WD HELP!

I know this is an old thread but my 2000 Limited is having the same issue. I am running through some of the fixes. I thought it was the front diff sensor, I removed it and tested it and it was bad so I replaced it and the indicator lights are still flashing and I am still stuck in 4wd.

My issue now is I need to be able to drive it and it is stuck in 4wd. I wanted to ask for the time being, could I remove the front drive shaft until I get it working, or is that not a good idea?

Any help would be appreciated.

I feel like that would be more trouble than it's worth.

Maybe you've tried this, but start from a very slow roll and push the button. Turn the wheel a bit in each direction so you're not going straight, zig zag a bit. Then stop, put it in neutral for a second, and do the same in reverse.

If that doesn't work pay a shop nearby for a few minutes of time to put it on a lift, get all four wheels off the ground, and try to get it to disengage. With no resistance at all from the wheels it might work.

If you haven't checked and/or changed fluid in the transfer case and diffs, do that. When I bought mine it didn't like to go in and out of 4WD, found that I had a leak in the transfer case. Fixed that, new fluid, and it was much better. Since then I engage 4WD for a few miles every couple weeks. I'm at 165k miles and the 4WD engages and disengages instantly now.

With any 4WD vehicle I've owned I exercise the system frequently. Whether it's a newer electronic system or a mechanical, vacuum line setup things can just get gummed up and not work so great if they go unused for years.
 
Tried to engage 4wd today by the button on 01, dashlight, keeps flashing.. won't engage, got under the car, tapped actuator on transfer case it disengaged, but won't engage. Bad actuator? Has anyone replaced? How much is the part?

I've not replaced an actuator but I hear it's a real *****.

Try shifting the transmission in and out of D and R and N. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries with mine to get it in or out of 4wd or to get the center diff lock on or off.
 
It's quite an involved process. It requires opening up the case to get to it and the part itself is quite expensive. It might be more worth your time to just swap a junkyard tcase in there honestly.
 
Update to this?

I’m having a similar issue. I’ve ordered the front diff sensor 84222-3070 and am getting it in tomorrow. Will be replacing the fluids and the sensor as well hoping this fixes my issue. Blinking 4x4 light and yellow diff light (if that makes a difference). I am also skidding around corners a bit and having trouble getting into parking spaces due to what seems to be the 4x4 not disengaging.


Edit: car is a 2000 limited production 01/2000 so that should be the correct part number for me.

If you skidding/skipping around corners, your center diff is locked (and the ADD is connected). Make sure the shifter is in the upper left position. In this position, even if the ADD is still connected, it shouldn't cause any problems around corners.

Yeah, i was able to shift through all including neutral, and have it definitely in the upper left position, still acts the same way. I’m really Hoping this sensor fixes the issue!
 
You need to engage and disengage it on a regular basis, mine would take up to ten minutes to switch when I first got it and within one day it is working like on the fly 4wd should. You use it or you loose it.

Well, i forgot to update but i did replace my unit with the part number described and it worked immediately. Problem 100% solved and i can easily shift betweeen 2 and 4wd now.
 
Mine's always been a little weird, but I seem to have pretty good success w/this method:

Start the car, immediately put it in neutral (not the t-case, the transmission), and push the 4wd button to disengage. If the lights continue to blink, put it in reverse, and then back into neutral. If still blinking, put it in drive and then back into neutral. Wash, rinse, repeat until it works. Sometimes it takes a few tries.

Hasn't failed me yet.
