so here's the deal fellas. new to the boards, but not new to yota's. i have always had a 22re in all my older trucks, but this is my first 4runner and first 3.slo.
-i have a '94 4x4 auto 3.slo with cylinder #6 missing.
-attempted to swap the dist. cap and button with some mismatches.
(the cap on it when i got it doesn't match the bolt hole pattern on the dist.)
-got a dist. rotor button for a '94 but again, doesn't match up.

-got a dist. cap for a '91 dist. and the bolt patterns match.
-got a dist. rotor button for a '91 and fits as well.

-my local toyota dealer tells me that there is only 1 dist. for a 2nd gen.

so apparently i am running a '94 4runner with a '91 dist, '91 new rotor button, and a '94 dist. cap. why i am running a '94 dist. cap is because when i put on a '91 dist. cap that actually bolts and new plugs and new plug wires, it won't turn over. however, it will with the '94 dist. cap. mind you the plug wires are different as well and swapped them all as needed for each model dist. cap.

someone tell me why there is only 1 dist. for a 2nd gen but why there are different parts and why after swapping to the correct parts for the dist., it won't turn over.

thanks in advance and God bless.

Probably a lack of knowledge. Not quite sure what is what, but I would find it easy to believe that their were minor changes from year to year on those parts.

When my alternator went out on my 91, I went to a local pick and pull and grabbed one from a 94. It was 10 bucks, so I thought why not. Their computer matched it as a match range.

When I took it home I discovered that the physical electrical plug was different. The voltage regulator had been changed between the 91 and the 94. It was removable, so I just pulled it off my old alternator and put it on the newer one. Worked great.

My point.... Toyota is like any other dealer and there are usually year to year changes. Improvements or minor tweaking. ECU's change many times from year to year...

So... who knows. Is this the original engine? Swap?

I hope this doesn't add to the confusion, but I replaced my cap and wires for my 94 3.0 and just went to O'Reilly. They looked it up in their computer and it was a perfect match.

thats just the thing, i got the cap and rotor for a '94 but the cap didnt bolt up all the way. one bolt hole was off by 1/4 to 1/2 inch. a '91 cap bolts up perfectly. but the plug wires are different between a '94 and '91. so when i added the '91 cap and the plug wires, it wouldnt start at all, just crank. put the '94 cap and plugs back on, and it started right up. see my confusion?

To be honest, I'd be for drilling out the hole to make the 94 cap bolt up and just running it. Sometimes you gotta settle for not figuring out the mystery...

gonna take it to a toy specialist and see what he says. thanks for the input. hopefully i will find out something tomorrow. let ya know what he says.

Working at oreilly's for the last 15 years has taught me one thing about all jap imports: just because the books only show one, sure as hell don't mean that it's so! Hondas are the worst on caps! the problem you have is super common on them! Now that being said, i don't remember running into this before with 'yota 'runners. but there is a first time for everything. i did have this problem with my ae86 corolla and my wife's altima.
