DIY 4th Gen Rock Sliders

Picked up a 2004 4Runner for my son a few months ago. We spent a fair amount of time getting it back into great mechanical condition. The PO changed the oil regularly, but didn't do much else. Needed new CV axles, rotors, brakes all the way around, front wheel bearings, change ever fluid in it, fixed a bunch of small leaks, installed an ICON lift and some tires and wheels and a bunch of other stuff. Then we decided to try building a set of sliders.

First I picked up this Baileigh bender real cheap... and then had some 1.75 DOM and 2x2 square tube delivered. This is my first project using a bender, so I spent a bunch of time reading before bending anything.

Started by figuring out the length and where I wanted the bends. Laid out a template on the floor, so I could replicate the bends.

I notched the tubes and cut some smaller support. Then welded them together.

Then I cut some base plates out of 1/4" plate. Drilled the mounting holes and had to bend the front plate since the frame on these truck start to narrow at the front body mount.

Then I cut some legs and tacked them to the mounting plates.

Then tacked the actual slider in place.

We removed the sliders and burned everything together. Then cut some gussets out of 1/4" plate and welded them to the legs at the mounting plates. This is how they looked once finished prior to powdercoating.

We dropped them off for powdercoating... and got these back. The powdercoating turned out great.

My son installed them yesterday. Pretty happy with the outcome given it was my first project using a bender.

The obligatory hi lift jack test...

At some point I might go back and weld the sliders to the frame along the bottom of the legs. For now it's a daily driver so not too worried about him beating it on the rocks.

This looks amazing! I love every bit of it - where was the bender from if you don't mind? I'd love to do something similar here in the near term.

Thank you... I found the bender in the for sale section on Pirate4x4. Brand new never used. I looked on Craigslist for a while, but everything I looked at was junk.

Gotcha, I'll have to look for something somewhere online. Not a tonne of used or retail support up here. To do the radius for the joints on the tubular pieces, did you use a round grinding stone the right size, or a mill? I'm wondering if I can get it close enough without having to machine it.

I agree, those look great. So does the Runner. I'd tell you to make a few more sets and sell them but you might get sued. Womp.

Thanks...! Yeah I hear you... good thing I have no interest in making more of these. Might make a replacement set for my FJC, but that's about it.

Awesome job... but the Baileigh bender is not cheap and a great investment.

And watch out metal tech might sue because your design. J/k
(look up metal tech vs demello)

Nice work. Always like seeing people build their own stuff.

Man, you don't kid around. Very good DIY project!

Looks awesome! I do not have a bender so will do something similar but using all tubes.

Thank you all... :) It was definitely a fun project. Taught my son to do a little welding and wrenching.

been following on facebook, those came out top notch Sol!

Man you are everywhere aren't you... hahaha! Thanks!

Okay lets be honest folks. . .check out that Taco and Porsche. What are the details on those great vehicles?!?

Oh and nice Runner! :bump2:

Thanks... it was a fun project and we're not done yet. Going to go slow, but will be building some bumpers for it eventually. All of this is about teaching the boys how to work on their cars and spend some time with them doing it.

The Tacoma is a 2001 and it's my other son's truck. Started off bone stock, single owner with 220k miles on it. He added an ICON lift with OME rear leafs, Demello sliders and front and rear DIY Relentless bumpers with a custom rear swing out that we built. He's planning an expo style bed rack and new tires and wheels, but he's a bit busy with college and he's a broke a$$ student.

The porsche is a Carrera S that my wife drives more than I do. I know not exactly fair... :)

This is my toy... it's been around a while, but have lots of fun with it.
