Wanting to do a full rebuild on a spare auto trans I have off of a 99 4wd Runner. Anyone have any tips suggestions etc etc etc etc. Anything from what kit in particular to buy or any special tools required? I'm fairly certain I've got everything and also know what kit I personally want to go with. This isnt out of necessity as its 100% out of fun. Let me know everyone, thanks!

Dollar store large plastic pans of various sizes & plenty of rags LoL
Don't forget a strong magnet to find loose parts. Good luck venturing in uncharted territory-

Sub'd. Do you have the FSM?

Always been scarred to crack one open shop near me is 300 labor including install minus parts. For that amount I just pay

It's not uncharted territory.

From NAXJA:

The AW4 is a fairly simple box - and a "Master" rebuild kit (including clutches, steels, and whatever) goes for about $300 locally, or a "Overhaul" kit (basically a reseal kit and components to renew the valve body) for about $90 - both at the tranny shop up the street from me here.

You will need two "special" tools that I was able to make from bulk stock - there are some very large snap rings (which won't work with standard snapring pliers - I made a part of "chopsticks" using 1/4" aluminum round rod and D&T for #4-40 setscrews) that worked well, and get a decent bit of barstock and some M10x1.5 and M8-something (I don't remember what) and some 1/2-20 allthread to make the bridge puller to pull the planetary sets out. If you need me to, I can probably dig them up and take digipix for you sometime in the next couple days.

Total cost for "special" tools - about $20, all up.

You MUST have a camera capable of giving you pictures straight away for any valve body work - since there seem to be a few revisions of what goes where, and the manual isn't always right. I should have the ATSG AW4 manual around here somewhere as a .pdf (it's the one I used - and I found it online somewhere. Probably at Strokers - groups.yahoo.com/group/strokers) which has everything else correct - I've just never trusted manual pix of valve bodies (and I'm usually rewarded for that lack of trust.)

The three valve body solenoids can be readily checked with an ohmmeter - as I recall, 13 +-3 ohms is nominal. Hopefully, they're fine - they're spendy to replace (and I haven't been able to build up a stock.)

With either renewal kit, you WILL have valve body gaskets left over - it's a kit for all AW4 variants (Celica, Supra, Pickup, Van, XJ, MJ, ...) and you will match the gaskets up against the old ones to select them.

Here's a more detailed how-to:

Have you figured out where you're getting your parts from? I came across this the other day: A340E Transmission Master Rebuild Kit A340F A341E A343E A340 V4AW3 Stock HD HP Overhaul: Oregon Performance Transmission

here is the pdf for the

A340F is in there with all the gory details.

A340 Series Repair Manual (RM216).pdf - Google Drive

I have wanted to give a try for a while now but... I just keep pulling decent used ones so... have not had the need yet.

I know ITP has a kit. kind of expensive but they have a pretty good track record.

A340 | AW4 Performance Transmission Rebuild Kit

I have found a couple of decent teardown vids on youtube. I think ITP might even have a build up vid for their kit? you can get a pretty good idea of the special tools you will need.

I think they have a lot more on their channel.

WOW thankyou for that info especially the manual! I hit the download button on that very quickly lol

I think you'll be fine, this stuff isn't that hard. If you have a huge table to lay things out in an order that makes sense (Bell housing) -> tail shaft, take photos and just bag everything as you go. Take some notes and utilize the FSM.

sleepydad How accurate do you think that manual you posted is? I didn't see any application for our motors in the manual.

I have done a partial tear down on an A340E and the manual was right on. I did not go all the way so I can't answer for the complete process.

I also believe the valve body description was right on for my 1997

there is going to be differences for sure, the FSM I have is for 1996-2002 and it has lacks descriptions of all kinds of differences that the early trucks had, different driveshaft lengths between limited and SR5/base, different trans pans between emissions types, different body mounts, different power steering pumps and lines between older trucks and newer... totally different braking systems between older and newer.

in general I think it seems pretty accurate. not sure your going to find a free pdf FSM for exactly the trans your working with?

After doing my own additional research and watching tear down videos there are a couple different versions of this trans but they're small differences such as a difference in a valve body etc. But the jeep model trans in comparison with the Toyota v6 model trans is nearly, if not completely identical. The differences in this trans were when they were mated with v8 engines which tore them up pretty bad and Toyota went to a different trans for the 8 cylinder engines equipped on Lexus and Toyota trucks / cars.

I've watched a few videos recently and it was interesting to learn that A340E variation to this particular transmission was used in the Supra's. Maybe that was common knowledge around here, but I had no idea.

look at the wiki... not sure how much to trust it but... it lists all kinds of stuff this trans was in

Toyota A transmission - Wikipedia

the one thing I found very interesting was

"OEM with 2JZ-GTE twin turbocharged engines only. This is the twin turbo only heavy duty version with some internal mods. The main case is similar to the common A340E but not interchangeable, the bell housing has "J3" cast into the upper surface, and is larger diameter to accept the larger torque converter and special flex plate. Maximum power using the stock internals should be limited to 500 (significantly higher than the standard A340E used with the 2JZ-GE normally aspirated engine)."
