DIY Kit bumper list

Hi! I want to do a front bumper on my very pedestrian mostly-commuter 02 SR5... gotta put a winch on there just in case it gets muddy on the occasional woodsy trip.

I like the idea of fabbing my own, but right now it seems like too inaccessible a project, but these bumper kits sound awesome... save $$$, do some welding/grinding/coating, and bam: bumper. While I can't be sure how long it would take to create a very good looking bumper from scratch, these kits make it super feasible.

My purpose is to list all the available options and you guys can help me fill in any I missed, post pics of your finished kits or your kit builds.

I'm surprised though. None of these strike me as "smoking" deals though. I really want an excuse to lay down a ton of crappy beads, but for just a few more $$ I can get a fully built 4xInnovations bumper.

What are your all thoughts? Price seem high for a DIY kit to anyone else?

Right? Plus welding rod, gas, self etch primer, primer & top coat. You can get an ARB (although bulky) that's powder coated for under $800.

I'll throw my hat in the ring, although not exactly a "kit". I provide custom designs that you can build yourself. Includes all necessary files, drawings, and detailed build instructions.

Many options and customization available. Have the parts cut out at a local shop, and its just like a kit, but no shipping costs. Many satisfied customers!

I will put my recommendation in for the bandit kits. I have gotten a lot of compliments over the 2 or 3 years I have had it. I had bandit modify the front design for me to add two pairs of square light holes in the wings and take out the turn signal holes as those are moved into the parking lights. I modded the rear a little while after I got it finished with a dual swing out as he only had a plain rear at the time.

I looked at CBI but didn't find any kits... Only DIY kits I see are for 1st gen 4R and Tacoma. Can you locate an offering from them?

Bandit! I saw your stuff in my searches, will add. Have you gotten rough pricing to have your parts laser cut and bent? I'd LOVE to have your vehicle CAD model, I might would consider designing my own if I had that.

Agree on cost of these kits. After cost of shipping and coating it's gonna add like $200 at least.. getting into built-bumper territory, but at least it seems less expensive when some of the costs are delayed.

4x4labs emailed me back and said they do have a kit and it cost $600. I still don't see it on their website

The prices can vary quite a bit to have the parts cut out on a waterjet, etc. It depends on where you live, the size of the shop, how hungry they are for business, etc. It helps if you know somebody with that type of equipment, and they can make you a good deal.

I would estimate between $150-$350 for most bumper designs.

BTW: There is no bending required. Just flat parts and a few pieces of angle iron.

gotcha, understood, if there were bent parts the cost would be a fair bit more.

It sounds like I've got a friend who will waterjet parts for me, so now many options hmmm:decision:

This is such a waste of time. Just spend a couple more dollars and get the fully assembled piece. If it doesn't fit right then you get to raise hell about it and ruin their reputation if they don't make your life easy. Too much of an arts and crafts project. Too much effort for too little return.

I understand that. It is much easier to buy it pre built and there is some safety behind it. However I would not be able to buy even one bummer for the price I spend on 2 bumpers and the swing out so at that point it was very much worth the work. And now I can say that I built them. So for someone who was in college and only bought stuff on massive sales (aside from the lift) it was the only way I could ever get armor and my roof rack. It is very dependant on the type of person that wants to and has the ability to but their stuff. But for me it is more than just an arts and crafts project.

I was actually talking about the kits that are shipped to your door. The Bandit bumper is the only smart idea of that list. But 500 bucks and still having to pay 200 in freight for a heavy ass hunk of steel from Timbuktu? FOH. I was in college too dude. Time is the only thing that doesn't have a refund.

I'll agree with you on that. The kits from the actual companies are spendy and not as worth it since it is only a couple hundred less than a fully built one. I also feel like shipping would be a wash for a pre built and a kit cause they would both be a large and heavy package. And it is true with the time but I really enjoy building stuff if it is for my 4runner or not so I didn't feel like I was waist my time or anything at least. So while I don't think I would get one of the kits persay, it would just depend how tight money is and if being able to say that I built it was worth it also.

Yeah, it's a bit of a middle ground between built and scratch-built that, as long at it saves "enough" money, would be a fun project... not for people who don't want a project or don't have the means to complete. $200 for shipping is a overestimate, it won't cost that much, especially not being the size of a built bumper.

Just my .02 cents. A diy bumper will always be cheaper. I plan on the coastal offroad front bumper and it's about 650 including shipping from Canada. Compared to a prebuilt front bumper is 900+ not including shipping. That's going to be a 400+ savings just saying. I also bought and welded up eimkeith's rear bumper, even at around 760 with shipping it still beats the cost of a premade rear bumper. I ship a ton of large bulky items at work, heavy large packages will cost a metric ship ton more then small and heavy. There are people who just want bolt ons and there are people who don't mind doing some work. It just depends how much $ you want to spend.

Also if you plan to go the plan route, before you do anything call around to get water jet cutting quote, my experience with them are they will be so outlandishly expensive as they are a "one off" job.
