DIY (or less expensive) TPMS solution for new wheels

All,

Talked with a couple of tire shops about moving my TPMS sensors over to new wheels on my '06.

They've both quoted me huge $ to do the job. One was $75 to remove the sensors from the old wheels, then $100 to install and mount/balance in the new wheels. I'm supplying the wheels and tires.

Are there any DIY, or less expensive, solutions to this? Wondering if it might be cheaper just to buy replacement sensors and have them installed in the new wheels (they are 11 years old anyway), but then I imagine there's the cost to program them.

Are there any scanners that can program new TPMS? I have a Snap-On MT2500 which was updated through 2006, as well as an OBDLink MX Bluetooth module (which I've used successfully to change many things Ford can modify on my Ford truck).

Do you really need TPMS? There is a how to on here on how to turn it off permanently. I disabled mine and haven't looked back.

My Toyota v6 Gen3's (RAV4 & 4Runner), don't have TPMS...but I share my one experience.
- I was getting our sons 2008 Nissan Rogue ready to sell (flip) / and TPMS dash light error, had to be fixed
- I'm from Canada, so take my higher prices into consideration
- Nissan dealership wanted $155 each, for the battery powered valve stems
- my garage owner friend, supplied universal ones for $55 each...worked great
- one TPMS had a broken core / other one, the battery was old & depleted
- he had all the scanners, reprogrammed them for Free...a 5 minute job
Normal tire dismount, install & balance, can run - around $80-$100/set of 4...even with regular valve stems.

If you don't by-pass the TPMS system, in your Gen4 / buy TPMS off Ebay or Amazon...OEM or Universal (on a budget).

a big part of the cost is if they are factory or oem brand. then they need to be programmed, which i presume is not any harder then reprogramming remotes so they always rip you off on that part.

i would just do without them and see what happens, you would have to remove the one in the spare as well but the point is, i have seen it said that if you remove them all you wont get a light. not sure if that is true but many on here who switched rims says its true. so remove them and see what happens, then do the TPMS deactivate mod if you need to

I did the bypass on mine and would suggest that route to others. I'm old school though.

1st that's rip-off price ain't that hard 2nd make sure buy the kit for the switch new rubber grommets ! 100$ for the labor sounds right , heard guys do Costco, Discount , shop around .

I just switched from stock tires and SR5 wheels to FJ 8 hole wheels and Falken Wildpeaks last night. I paid $95 at Mavis tire to have them mount, balance, and switch the TPMS from the old wheel set to the new ones including the rebuild kit for the TPMS. Definitely shop around!
