I thought I would share this. I called a place by my house for the quarter window replacement. I got there and it was a bit of a nightmare for something simple to do. I took it to a shop because I don't have enough time right now to do any projects. They removed the old glass and was going to put on a aftermarket window. Turns out it did not fit. They grabbed another window and bumped the price on me. WTF? I should have listen to my instincts, and not to the Yelp Reviews. I looked at my truck after they removed the window. I noticed they put a few scratches around the outside of the window during removal with a razor blade knife. Which is standard procedure but they were careless or not skilled enough.. SO I said F it. I took my truck and left.
I called a local wrecking yard and they had a OEM window instock. I got there and saw that the window had the antenna wire/plug clipped off. (sigh).
I took the window anyway. I just soldered the wire from my truck. Just additional time I have to spend.
On to the install. Tools and parts you need.
-A sharp scraper/putty knife. Preferable 2"
-Masking tape
-urethane window adhesive 3m or DOW brand (its what the pros use)
-primer 3m
-rubbing alcohol or glass gleaner
-Latex gloves
-Caulking gun (get a decent one since the urethane is thick)
Step 1: Scrape off the old urethane with putty knife/scraper. Leave a 1mm layer.
Step 2: Clean the area with alcohol or window cleaner. Make sure its fully dried. Do the same with the new/used window.
Step 3: Coat the primer onto and around where the old adhesive is. Also do the same around the new glass, and let it sit 5-10 minutes. Note wear nitrile or latex gloves while working with this. Do not get this on anything you don't want stained. This stuff does not come off.
Step 4: Cut a V shape on the nozzle of the urethane. The v should be about .5" deep. And Apply this to the Window housing. The urethane should dispense in a V shape onto the truck about .5" in height.
Step 5: Place the window onto the truck. Wear gloves while doing this. You may get urethane on you or a bit on the paint. Have a rag with rubbing alcohol handy and immediately wipe off excess. Right after you place the window on, use masking tape to hold the window in place. You can then move the window around a bit and readjust the masking tape. It takes at least and hour for the adhesive to set safe enough so you can drive. Preferably leave it overnight. Total cure time is 48hours. Hook up the Antenna plugs. One on tip front and 1 on bottom middle, and put interior panels back.
I hope this help Others out total cost of supplies is about 130. I was quoted 200 for a new aftermarket window. It's not bad if you find a PROFESSIONAL. Total time is about 1.5 hours. It can be done a bit faster but I was taking my time and making sure not to put unwanted scratches like the *******s that tried.
