Why not just buy the $130 hilux snorkel from Amazon?

I think the idea is sound, but I'm not sure how well this would work. It would be fine when driving, as rain would hit the front, but what about when not? It would have to be sticking up at least a couple inches from the cowl I'd think, which wouldn't work well with the 'sleeper' idea. If it sits almost flush so as not to be very noticable, when the 4runner is just sitting there in a storm (driveway, parking lot, traffic) the windshield would funnel water straight into it.

We'd almost need a complete U to cap it, but that wouldn't be flush either...

You may have a point about the cap. I think I'll be trying to piece something together today, or tomorrow. Maybe something will come to me while I'm picking up parts.

Because we don't want to cut a giant gaping hole in our fender. What I'm attempting will be completely removable and not noticeable once removed. This way you're not forever stuck with it. If you get tired of it, or want something different down the way you are out of luck with a traditional style snorkel, none of the holes are the same.

I don't NEED a snorkel; I have a stock height 2wd that is pretty much pavement only.
While I don't ever plan on getting rid of this thing, a gaping hole wouldn't exactly help its resell at all, especially on a 2wd. A knowledgeable 4wd buyer might actually like the hole, and therefore wouldn't mind.
The cowl can be capped off, and I think can look pretty incognito if done properly. Although I agree, this would be a whole lot more work.

It would be very useful, however, in all this flooding in Houston lately. I'm an IT Consultant so I'm ALL OVER Houston on a regular basis. I've had to go hours out of my way several times in the past few weeks to avoid high water, and it's only supposed to get worse. It would have been a whole lot faster if I could have simply pulled over, gotten the snorkel assembly from the back of the truck, taken the wiper cowl cap off, attached the assembly, and closed the deckplate. That'd take, what, 5 minutes max? I'm even thinking that the snorkel mount can be a formed metal bracket that simply closes in the passenger door. No holes drilled in the A-Beam.

There's also simply the DIY aspect of it, which is just fun.

Just an fyi it does not need to be permanent. All you have to do is buy a used fender the same color as yours if you ever want to go back. Or you could just buy a fender first and use that one leaving the one originally on your rig untouched and stored in a safe place. Fender go for $50-100.

That is a solution, just not the one I'm going for.

Ok, after some more digging i found this. i will be using this design. it will go from the factory inlet on the airbox, pass under the fender and then go into the side of the cowl area. For the time being it simply suck fresh air from the cowl. In the future i will be adding a top piece though, it will connect to the lower piece through the cowl area. I looked locally and was unable to source any kind of flex hose that would work, so i will have to do online shopping and wait for delivery on that and the snorkel head.

I'm afraid to cut holes in my fender too..

This is why I purchased another passenger side fender...

Plus the permanent one looks rad as heck!

Just saying it sounds like a lot of work to just remove one day...

If you NEED something functional get the hilux one, plus It looks good!

Unfortunately i got side tracked from it, due to a collision that caused some front end damage to the truck. This weekend almost all (going to be building a new front bumper instead of replacing it with a stocker) of my collision damage will finally be fixed and i might be able to start thinking about mods again.

Dang that sucks, good luck with the bumper building. I guess I'm going to give the internal snorkel thing a shot sometime soon...

I like the idea of a removable snorkel that you only put on when you need it. That way you don't have to worry about tree branches ripping it off. Or would a limb lifter cable reliably deal with the branches? It would be nice to avoid a limb lifter too. Or make that easily removable as well.

I did a super easy engine bay snorkel a few months back. I've never had water up there before, so it should work for me.

Could do fiberglass, carbon fiber, any color, etc.

Carbon fiber would be the bee's knees. I don't like the idea of drilling onto the pillar, so a unit that stops about 1' above the top of the hood would be amazing.
