Do i have to use 2 types of grease on 3G 4WD?

Bulletin says: "Use a grease gun to apply multi-purpose grease to the No. 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 grease fittings. Apply molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease, NLGl No. 2, to the No. 4, 5 and 6 grease fittings (double cardan joint)."

Question, would it be OK to just put moly grease on all fittings listed above?
Question 2: Pump slowly, no more than 3 times or until 'full' sound is heard? Sorry for dumb questions, never greased a 4runner before!

1. NO. Moly is for sliders and NaCl-2 is for spiders.
2. Spiders you can observe. Slider 3-4 pumps should be fine.

I can follow that greasing rule

appreciate the response <<<< but for the ignorant here that need a little education, why exactly? I was thinking both had the same base grease just one had moly added to it. Or maybe the type of material might be damaged by moly in the No. 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 grease fittings? Appreciate the patience!

Moly is best suited for SLIDING parts such as sliders on shaft; where Nacl-2 is right viscosity and composition for Spinning Spiders.
Just buy 2 grease guns they're cheap and will last life time. GL

Your answer concurs with some others i found that basically say because of moly's tendency not to move much, its best on parts that will slide back and forth whereas non-moly tends to move so is good for areas where they rotate and slosh the grease around. I'll label each gun with some permanent ink to keep 'em straight. :yo:

I think most people go a bit overboard on this kind of thing. I use one grease gun for all fittings. keeping them greased is far more important then the type of grease. just like engine oil.

I would be curious to see what a dealership uses? I would be surprised if they had 2 different grease guns.

ive worked at a few shops over the years, and none of them had different greases/guns for different uses.


it certainly cant hurt to do things EXACTLY by the book, but I just don't think its necessary.
