Do I need a bracket for double DIN radio

On my 2001 SR5 I replaced the factory radio long ago with a single DIN. Looking to upgrade to double din Kenwood DPX504 to get integrated Sirius and bluetooth. Crutchfield says no bracket is needed since it uses factory bracket but they don't know more than that. My single DIN needed a Metra bracket and I have no idea if the original factory radio had any sort of bracket or not since it was discarded ten years ago. On the other hand the "factory bracket" may just mean the left and right brackets behind the console and the double DIN screws into those. I don't want to get the console apart and find out I need more parts. Any help is appreciated

The factory brackets are double Din as most 4 runners well sr5 at least had a radio some had the CD player etc. The single radio had a plastic compartment underneath it. [ the early years 1996 to 1998 ]



Have any photos of your brackets that you have that way some users can see if they would work for you?

I don't know if Crutchfield means I use these ( in that cae no problems) or am I supposed to use some other factory bracket that was attached to the OEM radio ( in that case - trouble)

Repharasing the question - did anyone install a double din radio and need to use a part from the OEM radio or need additional hardware?

I did with all mine. I used the factory brackets and mounted the radio to it. Then put 4 bolts to hold it in the truck chassis. After that is in a snap the bezel into place.

So if you dont have the removable sides that mount into the sides of the radio. Then you dont the factory brackets. I have a few radios sitting in my shop with the brackets on them. If I remember tommorrow I snap a photo of them.

My 4Runner had brackets that worked with a double din radio.

I used the factory double din bracket on my old double din radio setup AND on my new single din+pocket current setup.

You can buy OEM brackets on eBay, or look in a junkyard

For the 3rd Gen 4Runners a double din fits exact with no mods. If you have a Single Din head unit in now, then you no longer have the factory brackets. You must either go to a junk yard and pick some up or find some on ebay. Another option is purchasing a multi kit from Metra part number 99-8104. Here is a link for Metra about the kit.

I believe you guys are talking about these puppies. I installed the first of three Alpine decks into these factory brackets the afternoon I picked up my new 4Runner in 1999. They work fine on single DIN Alpines. I don't know why anyone would change them. They are very solid mounts and will work on double DINs too. Some units may require drilling holes, perhaps.

That's what I've got. I'm actually about to drop in a Double Din that I pulled from my Land Cruiser before I sold it, so I'll have a pocket kit available if anyone needs one.

Yes I am thinking those radio brackets go across alot of 90s toyota models. As the Camry radio brackets look the same.

I'm with TheDurk. I installed a Sony double din in my '98 and had no issue using the factory brackets that were on the original unit. Bolted right up. Only slight trouble I did have was fitting the Alpine amp I added since the factory amp goes away due to incompatibility. There just wasn't a lot of room behind the dash but I was able to tuck the Alpine amp back there just not as clean as I would have preferred. But you can't see it so no one sees it anyway.

I was able to mount an aftermarket radio and a DIN sized cb with the factory brackets. The only thing using the OEM brackets is that I had to bend the little tabs on the sides flush so the CB sides would be up against the bracket. The holes lined up nice too!

Installed it today... I had the factory brackets that I thought were missing - on the previous metra kit. Fairly easy install - just had to shim the left side since it was a little farther back than right after putting the plastic trim back. Or the factory trim wasn't totally equal on both sides after 19 years. However the new radio starts the antenna wiht power on - which is not needed for Sirius radio. Need to add a cutout switch

Come tax season, my runner will be home to either a Pioneer or Alpine Double Din with Apple CarPlay. Now I have to call our Metra rep on if they still have those compact heavy duty backup cameras in stock.
