Do our vehicles have Journal or Carrier Bearings?

I'm having a hard time finding out for sure, but I just did a bunch of service to my 01' RWD this weekend and want to resolve some more of the issues I'm having. I'm going to install a transmission mount and am also looking to replace any other drive shaft related bearings. So my question is, do we have a Journal or Carrier bearing for the driveshaft?

I've found parts like this : http://a.co/0o7gPJN

But can't seem to verify that it is what's needed for our trucks?

Any help would be appreciated!!! :)

2WD 4runners have a single piece driveshaft. No carrier bearings or anything. The (longer) Tacoma's do have a carrier bearing.

If you are getting vibrations in the 60-70mph range, (not shaking, vibrations) it is a problem with the driveshaft. You may be able to just replace the u-joints, but you might have to replace the whole driveshaft to get rid of the vibrations. There is a rubber coupler in the 2WD shaft (between an inner and outer shaft) that wears out and is non-repairable. Any decent driveline shop should be able to make you a new one.

Thanks for the info! I'll be taking a look at it after I figure out if it's the transmission mount that's causing the issue here... pretty sure my transmission is knocking around and the white bushing seems to be WAY to far down on the mount from what I've seen in pictures. So, it's possible that's causing some of my issues.

The white bushing or whatever is there as a 'safety' if the rubber in the mount fails. It shouldn't generally touch anything.

Look around the top of the support there to see if the rubber has collapsed. Its an easy swap-out if it has.

I had vibrations in the 65-70 MPH range this summer while out in Sacramento (from Ohio) and had to replace a U-joint. "twas the perfect fix. No more vibrations.

Zen Automotive in Sacramento. Got the part in, put the truck on the lift, and finished her up all in the span of about 3 hours. I was super impressed.

How much did that end up running ya?

Chances are it's a U-joint. I've gone through 2 sets of aftermarket ones so if you can swing the money for them from the dealer I'd buy them. It's not a hard job to replace them, just a time consuming process.

Huh? What? What are we talking about. There's nothing like this at all under my truck or other trucks that I saw. .... am I missing something here ??

I know what a carrier bearing is. But never saw or heard it on our trucks

I just got a quote of $120 to balance the driveshaft and also replace the u-joints. Said it'd be $100 if I bring my own (Which I figure I can just get OEM ones if that's the case)

Seems like a fair deal all things considered.

Yeah, just imagine how I felt when I went out to check my transmission mount... lol

Everyone uses pix from the 4WD vehicles, so for a second I thought maybe I had a ghetto rigged transmission :faint2:

Hahaha. I was about to go outside and be like... " I am missing a part for THAT LONG !!" Haha

If you aren't inclined to do it yourself, it's a good deal. But $120 with parts means they are buying Autozone u-joints that suck.

I just don't have the desire/place to work on it and don't have any ability to balance the drive shaft. They said that they are going to use Najico U-Joints, but it's $100 or maybe a little less without them buying the joints. If I get the parts I'd just buy OEM and give them to them (Which they said was fine).

I replaced mine ~2.5 years ago after getting a similar vibration on the highway. I went with Altrom brand from NAPA and haven't had any issues at all since. Even though I am one of the first people to tell you to go OEM or nothing, in this case after personally seeing/inspecting the product (and noting that it was made in Japan...these things matter) I had no problem using it myself.
