Do the 199mm brakes add breaking power?

Hello All.

I have a 2002 with 15" Rims. I will probably tow a small 2000lb (Max) trailer in a few years... when I finish building it. My brakes seem fine. On the advice of my very conservative old mechanic I switched to Toyota rotors and pads and that got rid of all the vibration... been a year or so.

I've been reading and reading and it looks like the 199mm upgrade is really all about heat. True?

1. Do the 199mm actually add any breaking power?

2. They just bolt right on right? Check out my wheels.

3. There are NO 15" wheels that will hold the 231mm. Right?

Personally, I've only seen people complain about 199mm calipers failing and upgrading a second time to the 231's. So if your after stopping power and longevity, I'd go 231's and swap someone for stock 5 stars locally or something.

Gotcha. Well, I woooulllld do the 231's in 5 years... when my brand spanking new tires give out... in that case... I was reading the 231mm thread and these are the rims I want... I think they would look best for my year. IMO.... These are Tundra... that's all I know. If I knew what to call them. I'd look for them? Ask around?

i did the TBU when i had stock 16" star wheels. i upgraded to 17" 2014 4runner wheels. the 4runner rotors are thin and weak and can't hold heat. they warp quickly. i went through 2 sets in my first 4runner. when i bought my current 4runner, i upgraded. they do add stopping ability.

Yes but of course not as much as the 231. If you do go with 199 for now, get centric brand (or oem) that are at least drilled (ebay/amazon). They'll stop just fine around austin. Where they really help to dissipate heat is on hills (while towing) and especially mountain passes (with or w/out tow). They have more than enough stopping power - I've never had an issue and you know how austin rush hour is on 35!

I think the 199s only came on runners with 16" wheels, probably cuz they don't fit on 15s? (someone else help me here if i'm wrong). Luck!

Also very interested in this. Ive read the threads and know that the 231 is not an option with 15. Although maybe if you had a big enough spacer? I really want to upgrade because i am sick and tired of warped rotors! I'm not much help so hopefully someone here will be able to give both of us better answers.

I did get rid of the crappy rotor issue by spending for Toyota rotors. So far so good... over year ... but I don't tow or even put huge miles on my car... 5000 a year actually.

Ill be honest and say that i haven't invested in the toyota rotors, just some NAPA ones. I don't tow too much but i put quite a lot of miles on her. I've tried a few different options but within a month they are warped again, normal driving. So just going with toyota rotors solved this for you???

Yes. It did. My mechanics are gray haired ex-marines and they said that woudl do it. And it did.
