Any true Toyota guy knows the first GEN rocks the number one spot !
Fourth GEN is the best overall I've ever had , loved it.
Third GEN real close second , loved mine.
Fifth GEN took a little getting used to. the 2010 through 13 were step backwards in my opinion (a fender antenna seriously) the 14 and up are the best of the fifth GEN and I really like mine.I would order another brand-new 85 or 05 if I could.

I love my 5th and still warming up to her. Taking it off the beaten path more and more these days and the thing continues to amaze.
Having said that...
I still love my 3rd and could never fathom the day where I got rid of her.
Aside from impressive offroad performance, the two are completely different and I can't even begin to compare. 5th feels big, plush, quiet, smooth, and solid. 3rd feels simple, small, loud, and raw.
That 'raw' drivetrain with all of the noise, feedback, etc. yet simple dependability is why I remain in my 3rd gen 75% of the time.

They are all great in different ways.
I love my 5th gen the best because it is the most comfortable and technologically advanced.
My 4th gen was a great vehicle though. It has its pros and cons vs the 5th

I've owned a 3rd, 4th (x2), and 5th Gen. I liked and disliked things about each one. No, none of them are perfect, but I've made each one do what "I" wanted it to do. I've also been on this forum since 2004 and sadly, there's no love lost between the different Gen groups. Yeah, some of it's in fun, some isn't. Everyone forgets that when "their" year rig was the newest, there were just as many stoooopid questions asked until the next year/Gen came out. I go over to Pirate4x4 to relax.
SEARCH, and then search some more. What is important to me, might not be to you. Test drive and decide what's important to you.
My 5th is the first 4r I ever owned.
I once was interested in a used 3rd gen a few years ago, but the problem was the seat would not go back far enough for me to fit, I did all i could to see if there could be a compromise, but it was a no go, ended up buying the Xterra sitting next to it. The 4th gen at the time was too expensive for me.
I like the bigger size of the 5th, I know some of the old schoolers like the smaller size, but the 5th gen size is perfect in my opinion, I do not want anything bigger or smaller.

I quess define "mostly", they all have tires,frame,drivetrain (-smog pump) the same but the interior, exterior, options have changed . having owned several of those years big difference between 10 and 15 imho

I loved my 2000 4Runner Highlander (the one with the hood scoop). I had 181k mi before I had traded her in for my 2011 TE. Regrets... none... sentimental when I traded her in yup.

I am currently enjoying both! For the trade or resale value of my beloved 3rd gen, it wasn't worth parting with...even after the pain of an overheat, tow and several days labor to put her back on the road! So i now have the best of both worlds...

I think someone already said the 3rd gen has a livelier feel on the road but the 4,0 v6 VVTi is a beast of an Engine and the overall package give a fairly luxurious ride too! (Well..as much as a truck frame can...)

Ive had a 1st, 3rd and now have a 4th. The 4th I will hopefully keep forever because of all the things Ive done to it plus its paid off and I need a pure off-roading toy that won't allow me to bi*ch about mileage and comfort of ride. Next up is either a LE or a new LC which will be purely for road driving........famous last words, I know.
