Just wondered how often you bring your engine up to redline .

I don't very often but every now and then I do a WOT just to blow the cobwebs out and avoid the wear ridge that can

happen. On my auto tranny, 3.4 v6, shift point is 200 rpm below redline.

Ive do it very very rarely. My talon I would bring 2k past redline all day. I rarely bring it up there because the motor is way out of its tq efficiency so really no reason to be that high. Its just a set number where the manufacturer thinks the motor is near its threshold.
 
I've redlined my 4runner maybe 5 times in 8,000 miles. My '92 celica however spent the better part of a year bouncing off the limiter. I guess that's why it didn't last all too long.
 
I go WOT everyone once in a while in my automatic 2002. I'll take my '97 to the redline all day. It's my wheeler so I give no ****s.
 
I drive a 5-speed. I have never hit the limiter in this truck in 15 years and 165k. I can't imagine a situation where I would redline, unless maybe if I attempt to pass where I really shouldn't in an SUV. I don't believe it has any therapeutic value vis-à-vis cobwebs or anything else and probably does more harm than good.

It's good to run her strong and hot from time to time, but no need to redline.

We have a '97 Diesel turbo HiLux in Brazil that lives on the redline almost every shift.

Should still run good even off the rev limiter all day. Its a toyota, it can handle it!!!

On a side note, if you vehicle motor is already well broken in. Low rpms driving should not cause wear ridge that would break the ring. Its usually when people baby there motors when breaking them in. We always used low boost on our turbos and would rev hard from low rpms to 5k rpms to fully seal the ring so you wouldnt get oil blow bye.
 
What is the money range of the v6? When passing on the freeway - maybe going from 70 to 80 - I put it into 4th and do not get the acceleration I want. I am tempted to put it into 3rd but I'm afraid the rpm would be too high. When accelerating hard up to maybe 85 I usually change 500 before redline. But where is the most power to be had? Which RPM should I shoot for for MAX performance? (5-speed btw)

PS in my 2006 V8 I was at redline ALL THE TIME. That was a fantastic engine.

There is a elasticity to the moving components and the amount of elasticity travel is completely dependent on the speed of the engine. Things like conn rods actually are a few millionths longer at higher rpm's.

I see a second answer in this thread that I was not sure about and that was if there were rev limiters incorporated. Never had it come on with me.

The 5VZ-FE's horsepower peak is at 4800 rpm. The HP curve drops quickly after that, so there's not much point in revving it past that RPM on a regular basis.

In both my 3rz and the 6cyl, My rule of thumb is 3rd gear until 70. I can push the 6cyl a little past that mark. If I'm already over 70, there's no use dropping to 3rd. And I can't see 3rd being safe or useful at that speed/RPM.

Also, for fun, my Ultragauge alarm goes off at 4900 RPM which, after a delay, is enough to give me a definite reminder to upshift when I'm passing someone on the 55mph two lane highways that I spend most of my time on. I like to think it lets me keep my eyes on the road while knowing when I'm cracking 5100-5200RPM.

I have run the little 3rz to 100mph (downhill haha). It was screaming at about 4800RPM in 5th.

5speed + s/c + h2o/methanol spray = redline ...... Ah ah ah occasionally but purely by accident. Lol

I have repair manuals with HP/TQ qurves for many engines. However, posting those would be a pain.

Keep in mind that while the HP/TQ peaks in a 4Runner are at the same RPM as this T-100 graph, the HP/TQ peaks in a completely stock 4Runner are 183 hp and 217 lb-ft.

The reason for a loss of 7 hp and 3 lb-ft, is that the 4Runner came with a more restrictive (quieter) exhaust system.
