Do you "REDLINE" your Engine?

Once in a while I hold the pedal to the ground. Which I think is ok once in a while to make sure the motor still runs strong. If it took that 10 second beating then I'm good to go still lol. But usually when merging onto parkway I hit like 4-5k rpms to merge into traffic. Then cruse at 65-70. Some times I cruise at 80-90 which clearly puts the auto at higher rpms for longer time but it's Toyota and it better be holding up!!! No? I very rarely cruise at 65 and floor it to see how well it holds up to accelerating.

Go on the mr2 forum. you'll find the 5vz swapped in that 2700 pound mid engine tail wagger and you'll see redlines all day long.

Twin turbo and ridiculous horsepower can be had out of these iron blocks.

That being said, I have a 2000 4x4 5spd and even though I used to redline my mr2, I rarely do so in the 4runner... I really don't see the point if I'm not autocrossing and trying to shave .1 Seconds off my time.

I never even think of going near it, I stay well below 3500 period.

I hate driving automatics because they let the engine rev to 5k+ when you get into it. I can never get used to it.

Never, no reason to. Plus I drive it like a granny anyway, mainly because aside from a 2011 Civic I had for a bit the T4R is the most reliable vehicle I've had. I previously owned an SR20 swapped 240SX (S15 w 6 spd), an EvoVIII, and a mildly built DC2 Integra LS/V... all of those lived at redline or above lol.

If only I could just throw in that 4.0L V6....

On-road is different. I'll try to shift at 2k and baby it on the way to the trail.

I have repair manuals with HP/TQ qurves for many engines. However, posting those would be a pain.

Keep in mind that while the HP/TQ peaks in a 4Runner are at the same RPM as this T-100 graph, the HP/TQ peaks in a completely stock 4Runner are 183 hp and 217 lb-ft.

The reason for a loss of 7 hp and 3 lb-ft, is that the 4Runner came with a more restrictive (quieter) exhaust system.

Back OT...

I redline occasionally in 4Lo, mostly in reverse with center diff locked. It means I got into somewhere or something I am having trouble with or shouldn't have 'launched' over and need the gusto to get back over it!

Or that the front end might be hanging over the edge, literally, and I need to whip/slide the front to avoid the bank on the other side but still have enough momentum not to spin and slide over the edge

We've been in some gnarly backwoods hillside in bad weather that washed out the very narrow ATV trails, crossed logs, etc.

But seriously, ill get on it usually at least once when I drive it. Ill do a 25-75 run at WOT getting on the freeway. Mainly because its just fun to me, not trying to prove anything but it just puts a smile on my face.

last time I redlined my engine was when I was reaching for my hat after church and my foot slipped and slammed into the pedal, all the old people jumped at the sound of my exhaust. I felt cool and like a jackass at the same time.

Where can I see a graph of HP and torque for the v6?

Most of my daily shifts are at about 3k, sometimes when I need more acceleration I'll 'push' it to 3500 but I go by what I feel/hear from the engine. Now my porsche, again based upon what I hear/feel from that engine (also a 3.4) I push it to 7k regularly-what a feeling.

Ok so no one asked/said-do you guys run your tranny on Eco or Pwr mode? I like power mode always-gotta keep up with traffic! :rockon:
