Do you use Rain-X (or equivalent rain protection)?

I use Rain-X all year long. It helps so much for the snow.

One thing I make sure I do is apply Rain-X right before a road trip. It helps a lot with washing the bugs of your windshield. Just a hint for the future!

I loathe Rain-x...The only thing it is good for is removing sap from your car.

Unless you re-apply constantly, it has a detrimental effect IMO.

It takes what used to be one large drop of water and makes it numerous small drops of water hence reducing vision.

Just buy the Rain-X Washer fuild. Its removes light frost, (Not ice), helps remove bugs (not perfectly) and you never have to worry about applying it again. Just use the window wash button a few times a month. That is all I have used for years now. No more applying it from the bottle.

I bought Rain-x on a whim for my gf's civic. Between her wipers being shit and her glass not being treated, driving in the rain was a mess.

I followed the directions on the Rain-x bottle (applying 2 coats), and I replaced her windsheild wipers with Rain-x Wipers, and HOLY SHIT did we see a huge difference.

As soon as I got a chance, I changed my blades and covered all my glass (including moon roof) in Rain-X.

Great stuff. I might consider getting the Fluid that goes in the washer fluid tank. Sounds simple to maintain after all ready applying 2 coats.

There's a hydrophillic coating on the windshield and front passenger windows, so no need for Rain-X there. I use it on the back and side windows.

I know Toyota publishes it as hydrophilic, but if that was true, the windshield would dissolve in water!



I use rain-x all around, and agree that it is good even in winter, allowing rain/snow/ice to slide off easily.

Where did you read that Toyota published that the windshield is hydrophilic?

I didn't even know it till I read a lot of people mention it here on the forum.

Rain-X is great when it's freshly applied for the first week or so. After that I hate how my wipers leave a little streak or trail of fine water droplets. If there is a way to completed remove Rain-X after it's application, I would consider reapplying it on my windows. The upkeep to keep applying Rain-X in non-rain seasons is why I stopped using it. In the morning when there is dew, I don't like how my wipers streak and the glass seems like it's still dirty after cleaning them (because Rain-X isn't completely gone).

There's no way the windshield is hydrophilic, because no matter what speed I'm at, I still need to use the wipers.

However...every single window besides the windshield is near dry when I'm driving. Plus...I love how the rear spoiler keeps the rear glass dry.

On my 4Runner...the windows are untouched, but w/ my Camry & Civic...I do apply Rain-X on it.

I always apply (2) coats of Rain-X on all the windows except the small triangular window & the moonroof.

Starting late last year...I stopped applying Rain-X on the windshield.

Reason being is that it's only effective on the very first day. Plus, you need to be traveling at like 25 mph.

If it continues to rain, you're okay, but if the weather dries up, dirt attracts to your windshield & it's no longer effective.

Lastly...again as I mentioned, I apply (2) coats of Rain-X before it rains. If there's a short hiatus of rain, I'll retouch the windows w/ (1) coat, but if there's a long hiatus of rain, I'll start over & apply (2) coats.

I just bought some since I was out and man what a difference!! It worked very good getting ice off of the front and rear windshield and works great in snow and rain.

They say that, but I don't think that applies to the front windshield.

You can defiantly tell that it is on the front side windows, but I don't believe (even if Toyota says so) that it is on the windshield. It just does not repel like the side windows.

Also I have had the displeasure of having my windshield replaced twice due to soft/weak factory Toyota glass, and both replacements (all factory Toyota 4Runner glass) did not have any repelling properties what so ever. In fact on the last replacement it was raining and the new windshield sheeted so bad, that I got out and applied some Rain-X before I left the service area.

Also the service manager didn't even have a clue what I was talking about when I asked if the replacement glass was hydrophillic coated. It was as if I was speaking greek to him.

To answer the OP question, I LOVE Rain-X. I use the additive that goes into the reservoir AND the combo glass/Rain-X cleaner in all my vehicles.
