Do you use your e-brake when parking?

Yes, I've always used it in my other cars, never really thought about the process, but I guess from now on it's brake, park, e-brake.

I didn't know it's use keeps the rear brakes adjusted. That's good to know.

Last time I used mine was last November! Coming out of the hills with no engine running, and my brakes quit applying pressure. Grabbed it on, started the engine, applied all brakes, slid to a stop. Dumped my pants over the bank because they were not savable. Talked my buddy back into the rig. Don't remember using it before, and have not used it since. But I do use it when needed.

There is no doubt that resting the weight of the vehicle on the parking pawl is not good. Over time, you could fatigue the pawl and break it.

Come to a stop and shift into Park. While still holding pressure on the brake pedal, apply the parking brake. Now you can take your foot off the brake pedal. Doing it this way keeps the pressure off the parking pawl and puts it on the rear brakes. Even on relatively flat ground, the vehicle will settle onto the parking pawl. If you've got a working parking brake, use it.

I use it. It's just something I always saw done when growing up. I never leave a vehicle without engaging it. With that said... I don't think it matters much. I see people just throw a vehicle in park and walk away. I've NEVER seen a parking pawl break. Never. My uncle parks on a hill and I can see his cars slam down on the parking pawl when he parks them. These are old cars and while the e-brake might be seized up from lack of use, the parking pawl hasn't sheered off.

Avoiding drivetrain stess is the goal - so,

On the flat it's into Park with brakes still applied and pull the hand brake until just set, release the foot brake pedal.

On an incline, it's hold the foot brake and go into Neutral, set the hand brake firmly, then put into Park. Then, 'turn front wheels into the hill' we were always told years ago.

You know you've done it all correctly if you don't get a 'clunk' going into gear when you return...

All the time now

I just had new rear shocks installed on our 5sp. and while it was up on the lift my mechanic freed up my frozen left side E brake. Had to take the wheel and drum off, get out the torch and smoke it up. Now the lever just needs to crank up an inch or so instead of all the way to the top of the console, and it works! The PO never used it so it froze solid. Now I got religion and use it every time I park.
