Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Mike,

Will the MRR shocks be compatible with my current dobinsons springs? I'm thinking about upgrading in the near future.

Today I noticed one of the rear 5100's were leaking. There could be a multitude of factors but I have the ToyTec Superflex springs and they're marketed for an aditional 2" of flex with extended shocks. I could see the the axle wanting to try to pull the shock top through the shock frame holder at times. I ordered Radflo 2.5's for the rear and I'm trying to get a right set up for it. The Radflo shocks are only good for 2" of lift as well.

I've messaged PlasticsGuy about his bumpstops but figure I'll think about springs also.
I was looking into the said springs below and wonder if any one has anyone has issues with their shocks bottoming out with these springs. I'm sure Dobinsons has done their research and developed a great spring though. Just want some opinions. I also don't carry any load in the rear hardly any of the time other than a tool bag and recovery kit. But when I do on rare occasions for beach trips + people in the rear, I've noticed it levels out which is nice. Haven't seen front end rake yet, which I don't want. Which is why I'm contemplating between these two springs.

C59-505 - Stock rear end load, 1.5" lift. 405/405mm, 17mm wire, 220LB
C59-325 - Stock rear end load, 2.0" to 2.25" lift. 420/420mm, 17mm wire, 220LB

It's currently sitting like this. Last time I measured hub to fender on the rear, it was 24.25"

Hey Mike,

I have Bilstein 5100's that I'm looking to compliment with some Dobinsons coils. I am looking for a 3"/2" lift (80-100lbs in the front & stock rear).

Would you recommend the
C59-302 - 100-220LBS heavy load front weight, 2" lift. 395/395mm, 17mm wire, 586LB
OR
C59-352 - 200-240LBS heavy load front weight, 2.0-2.25" lift. 385/385mm, 18mm wire, 730LB

Either of those along with the C59-325 in the rear

I'd go with the C59-302 since you don't plan to put that much weight in the front. The C59-352 has some serious spring rates! 730 lbs is better used on a full steel plate front bumper.

Looking at swapping out my suspension to go to a 3in lift. Will the regular 4Runner 3in lift work with the pro? I don’t think their is anything different between the regular 4Runner and the pro.

Yes, just order the 3" stuff the same way, based on added weight, etc. It all bolts on the same way.

I could see the the axle wanting to try to pull the shock top through the shock frame holder at times. >>>Sounds like maybe you didn't have the washers and bushings in the right sequence. This shouldn't happen.

C59-325 would give you right about the same hub to fender as what you have now.

The C59-302 would be the right coil, but the coil seat will have to be raised to add the extra 1". Those 5100's really don't like heavier coil springs with the clip height raised up. They also have no warranty when used with non-stock coils, just a heads up.

Sorry, I guess I should have explained it better. It just looks like it because the bushing gets so compressed. I have it set up as shock-washer-bushing-frame-bushing-washer-top nut.
Given that there's 2" of extra flex perside with that spring, and the 5100s aren't extended shocks, I think the shock is bottoming out and trying to over extend. Thinking your springs wouldn't do this to my shocks.

But thank you, still debating between the two, but C59-325 may be what I'll go for.

Shout to Mike at Dobinsons

Hey all,
I'm new here and to 4runner stuff, but not new to lifts and offroading, so I was a little lost with lifting a 5th gen. I just wanted to give a shout out to Mike. He put up with my multiple e-mails of stupid questions and confusion and got me on the right track. Even took care of me on the customer service side after I placed my order.

Great Service, Mike!

Brandon

The shocks are the limiting factor on down travel. They are intended to serve that function. They should have internal rubber bumpers for down travel at the end of the stroke. I don't know about 5100s specifically, but most shocks do. It's the same in the front.

Longer shocks will allow more down travel until you reach another limit - like control arm binding or sway bar limit. You also will need bump stops to keep longer shocks from bottoming out. That's where you are most likely to damage something. Also if you extend beyond the length of the coil spring - the springs will fall out. You don't want that.

Hi, i’’ll probably go with 302 in front and 725 in the back for my 5th gen (with dobinson uca and drop diff) . Will I need the 1/4 Toytec front top plate spacer with this setup?

Thank you!!

No, you shouldn't, as the offset height rear coils should take care of any possible lean.

Great, thanks for the information. Didn't know about internal bumpers. So it sounds like the most damage to be done is when the shock hits full compression then, and then more. Sounds like bumpstops first to be in the safe side then these springs. Ordered Radflos and just looking to keep everything on the safe side since I saw one of my rears leaking a bit.

I have an SR5P 4x4 (no 3rd row) and am currently running bilstein 6112s at the +1.5" setting, and 5160s with stock rear coils. I'm really happy with the ride, but I'm considering more lift; that is, raising the 6112s to the 2.55" setting and adding C59-505 springs for 1.5" of rear lift.

Reading through this thread, it seems some people get more than advertised rear lift with the Dobinsons springs, which I really don't want. And it's a little unclear how many of these lifts eventually settle into spec. How concerned should I be about getting more than advertised lift with the 505?

And speaking of settling, does the 500 miles of break in mentioned throughout the thread necessitate 2 alignments (1 post install, 1 post settle)?

Also, will the increased rate of the 505s be a mismatch for the 6112 springs (which, as I understand it, are longer but match the factory front spring rate)?

Just installed a Dobinson Mild 1" lift.

The photo on the Right is the before and the Left is after (see date Stamped on photo).

My combination is below
C59-238 springs with GS59-700 struts.on the front
C59-599 springs with GS-705 shocks on the rear.
If I didn't tell you that it was lifted you probably won't notice, My wife didn't till she had to get into the truck. She is short but didn't have a problem. I was worried I would have to get sliders.

My intent with this lift was to get rid of the nose dive and get a better ride quality, I did, the waddle is gone, Nose Dive is substantially less, Its feels more truck like and doesn't look like a station wagon.

I will remove the SR5 rockers that came with the truck and order the rockers from the trail edition. picking up some clearance along with the" Antman Mod" and remove the air-dam under the front bumper. this should solve some other clearance issues.
I don't want larger tires, I'm more concerned with garage door clearances and gas mileage. The truck spends more time and miles just getting to where I like to go. My off roading is not extreme. those days are gone.

I went to a couple of garages to get bids on the install. The guy at the frame and suspension shop looked at the 4runner like it was a UFO. he took his install price from the toyota installation shop manual.basically what the dealer would charge.
The other shop asked all the right question, "what model is it, does it have KDSS or Xreas.(my truck has neither) with that I felt they had done this before. They were a Hundred dollars less then the frame shop.
Very happy with the way it turned out, just what I was looking for.

I want to thank Mike at Dobinson for the great customer service especially during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Before the lift I had
19 3/4" left Front .......21" left Rear
19 3/4" right front ......21 1/2" right rear
1/2" lean in the rear only, that was with a full gas tank
After the install
21 1/2" left front......... 22 1/2" left rear
21 1/2" right front .......23 right rear
Measurements taken from center of hub to fender.

UpDate: 1/15/2019 After 800 miles, Both front settled 1/4" to 21-1/4" Rear is the same as before 22 1/2" & 23. PERFECT Rides great handles a whole lot better than stock.

Thank you for the excellent post and info! I'm looking to do something very similar. Any chance you have a pic with how the truck settled after 800 miles? Thanks in advance,

Changing the rear springs won't affect your alignment. People get different measurements because not all the trucks come off the line the same, and also people have different weight that they carry. Many guys early on also weren't installing the springs right, and they weren't in their spring seats properly causing extra height, so their measurements weren't accurate at all.

C59-505 will give at least 1.5" of lift, and more like 1.75" for a completely empty truck. The difference is ____ <that much

A vehicle with a 3rd row seat sits 1/4" lower for example. Every 100LBS in the rear squats the truck by about 1/4", FYI.

bowhun2r. My truck looks the same . Actually I didn't see any difference until I measured it.
There is something I have noticed since I got my lift. when I look at some of the newer 4runners on the road they seem to sit higher when stock than my 2011 did prior to my lift. I realize the different variations of the 4 runner make a big difference in suspension. I also think they differ from year to year. That may be why no two lifts will measure the same.
I look at some of Dobinsons pictures with the same lift configuration that I have and no two look the same. I was debating weather to go with the 300s on the front coil overs but wanted to maintain a little rake.
I'm very happy with my set up. If I was going with larger tires I would have gone with the 300s up front. and taller springs in the rear.

Thank you for the feedback. I had a 2016 TEP with an icon stg 5 and looking back... it was a bit much for what I need. I'm leaning towards the 300/599. I like the rake but just don't want to over due it (thus my question) like I did on the 2016.

Agree... exact same gear on different trucks will look different due to all the variables. Your truck looks great. Well done!

I'm looking forward to swapping the XREAS out and getting the nose dive eliminated (or nearly) and some height in the front. The bumper swap will help with that as well.

Again, thank you for the feedback.
