Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Mike,
Most of the forum posts and YouTube videos that I have seen about upper and lower rear control arms, the person just replaces them at the stock locations. I watched one from Dobinsons with a guy named Hayden Titmarsh (Dobinsons Upper & Lower Trailing Arms Informational Guide - YouTube). In it he states that when you lift a truck it moves the rear end forward in the wheel well. After installing the MRA59-A701 & C59-701v in the rear of my 4 Runner. I measured the distance between the leading/trailing edge of the wheel well, divided in half and marked the center. Then ran a homemade plum bob. Like he stated the center line of the hub is forward of this line by about an inch. So when my upper & Lower control arms get here. I will make the lowers longer to push the rear end back to center in the wheel well. Then use the uppers to adjust the pinion angle back to parallel. The question I have is about the drive shaft. Is the stock one going to be long enough, or do I need to start looking for a longer one?
Yes that is all correct. Pushing it back too far though can cause slip yoke issues and then vibrations. You generally only move the axle back to gain clearance if your tires are hitting, and to correct pinion angle. Centering the axle for visual reasons won't change any performance or the way the rear end works. Any lift of over 2.5" in the rear will affect pinion angle and it should be corrected. You're running the 701Vs so doing this will set it up properly.

With a standard sway bar installed (non kdss) you can't have the coil seat lower than OE which is 213mm. The sway bar will hit it otherwise. So unless you'll be adding weight to the 314s to lower the height, you can't do that. You'll need 302's instead.

Mike, just to follow up on that, if I added a warn hybrid bumper and winch, roughly 150-160lbs plus the roughly 30lbs of skid plates, will I be able to achieve a 2.5” front lift height on the IMS at the OE coil seat location with the 314’s? As I understand, the 302’s I have now would drop down to 2” with around that much weight and I do not want to add a lot of preload to gain height back.

Yes, that would be correct. ~2.5" lift with 314's and that added front weight.

FYI, the added preload would be 1/4" to gain 1/2" of lift, since it's a 2:1 ratio from the strut position to actual lift height at the wheel.

This is kinda in line with a question i have, is it ok to run more than the 213mm preload height? I'm running the IMS setup with 302's and 50700s and am going to add a winch and lo pro. I feel like there's a lot of rake already (505s/50705's) and this is only going to make the difference more noticeable. I'd like to bump up the preload 6-10mm(on the shock) or so to compensate. I also have KDSS fwiw. The Dobinsons manual is pretty clear that 213mm is the number and it shouldn't be messed with. This whole thing is kinda funny because i was asking a while back about going lower than 213, now i want more, lol.

"Usually" you won't want to go any more than 226mm, which is 13mm (1/2") over OE height and adds 1" of lift. If it needs any more than that, then you're usually better off changing coils.

In your case, if you go up 1/4" from where it is now (220mm), it will add 1/2" of lift, and you could go up more if needed, but the IMS59-50700 shouldn't be set for more than 3" of lift because then you'll have very little droop travel left in the strut and could top out frequently. So it's a balance of lift height vs travel.

Awesome, thanks for the info. So, with my 302s i'll probably go with that 1/2" of wheel height (1/4 on the strut) but don't exceed 1" of total extra lift (assuming 120lb of winch + bumper)? I figure in the worst case i'll just buy some stiffer and/or taller springs from you guys. I love the handling now and if the winch messes with that i definitely want to get back to how it's set up. I can't say enough about how great the IMS setup is to drive on and off road.

C59-327 with King 2.5s. Fronts are 650lb with 8 threads showing (~3in lift). Ive since added a C4 Lopro and visually, it sits pretty level - haven't taken any measurements. I do get reverse rake when loaded up for trips, but only if i'm loaded to the brim. Probably could have gotten the 329s but i have no regrets with these.

Yep, no problem keeping the stock coils on there.

I actually made this new IMS kit last week, so that people who want to save money and keep the stock coils or just level it up can do so with the IMS struts and shocks (which is kind of what Falcon do).

Dobinsons IMS Leveling Kit Toyota 4Runner 2010-21 | Exit Offroad

Hey Mike! I've got the kit in my cart but looking at this top mount spacer and not sure what this does for me or if I need a set for both front and rear installs...

DOBINSONS PS59-4030 1/4″ ALLOY STRUT TOP MOUNT SPACER

Can you give me some insight into the value of this part? Thanks in advance...

You won't need that, as you can adjust the IMS up or down if needed to correct for a lean. That spacer isn't even linked on that kit page.

The lower spring perch is now stepped versus flat. This is the primary change that has resulted in the replacement of earlier front coilovers under a TSB.
Oh yeah, I heard about that. Their coils were snapping. That's super embarrassing for whoever made them.

The pro stuff can still be removed and replaced with Dobinsons, like all prior models.

Thanks, that's what I was expecting after reading a couple more times... sounds like the kit is all I need (plus an installer).

I've been reading through these threads. I have a 2020 TRD Off Road with the TRD Pro Fox Suspension. I want to lift the front without jeopardizing the fox suspension (no top shims for me). Anyway, I was looking at new coils to do this, either the Eibach TRD Pro coils (front only) or the Dobinsons (C59-748) front coils for the TRD Pro. DOES ANYONE have any input on these? Eibach offers 1.6" of lift and Dobinsons offers 1".

I'd like to know which would be the best option? This is mostly for looks and I intend to keep my 265/70/r17 Falken Wildpeaks on. I'm not a big fan of countering the R&D that goes into these vehicles.

thanks!

Did you replace with 19/20 front coils or ‘21? After OP bashed a competitor a little bit (poor taste IMO), I took the discussion private and found that Dobinsons does not offer a coil compatible with the ‘21 Fox TRD shocks. If you have the earlier version, just get the Icon 650lb, 13” springs. They were $75 each on metaltech last I checked.

I have the 19 fox trd pro suspension. Good looking out! Ill take a look at those icon coils. I like the idea that they are cheaper but dobinsons offers them in red which would be nice to match the original fox set up.

Since it sounds like you really wanna maintain the r&d that goes into the fox pro suspension id put the eibach kit at the top of the list. They make the springs for most OEM applications and they designed and tested that kit tuned specifically for those shocks. You want to maintain those ride zones in the fox suspension and any springs that bring them out of different zones in compression or rebound are gonna give you a worse ride
