Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

Trying to decide

I have 285 70 17 BFG KO2s, Spidertrax 1.25 spacers, JBA UCAs waiting to go on my 07 Sport V8. No added weight. Already pushed front fenderliners forward and will trim the bumper cover.

I've been thinking about going with:
C59-314s up front
C59-505s in rear
with Dobinsons struts and shocks

I don't mind some rake but would like less than factory.
Hoping for minimal lift without rubbing after minor trimming.
Daily driver light off-roading
CrikeymikeWill I have any issues or should I be going with something else? I just haven't seen anyone with this same set up (lift and tire size). The closest is something like in the quote below but not sure about how much rake it has. Or driftmonkeys original setup like I quoted on the previous page of this thread (post 1082) where he has 2.5 and 1.5 springs and 295s.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks guys

Welcome to the forum!!

Here you go man, this is 2.5" front and 2" rear, right after install so it would have settled a little bit.

He's running these parts:
C59-314
GS59-221
C59-325
GS59-705

And here's where all of the options are broken down: Dobinsons 1" to 3.5" Lift Kit for Toyota 4Runner 4x4 2003-2009 (all options)

Should be fine with that setup. 2.5" front and 1.5" rear with 33s is the most common setup Dobinsons sells for 4th gens.

Ok great thanks! I'm going to order the front springs/struts/top plates fully assembled. Is that done in Jax or at the Miami warehouse before they ship?

Currently have All Pro 3" lift FJC rear springs in my 4runner and its sitting a little stinkbug. I could lift the front end some more (Fox coilovers) or since I am planning to remove the stock spare tire and weight distribution hitch but replace both with a simple tube rear bumper, what springs would lower the rear an inch? Don't plan on hauling a lot of weight, probably won't do a swing out spare tire holder or anything like that. Just want a 1.5" lift spring or so. Which Dobinson spring would be best?

With a light rear end, one of these would be best.

C59-505 - 1.25-1.5" with stock weight
C59-325 - 1.75-2" with stock weight

Hey Mike - Currently running OME 895 in the rear, which I believe are similar to C59-327. For shocks I have Bilstein 5160. I have a swing out tire carrier with my spare tire and some accessories mounted. I'm guessing there's close to 200lbs of added weight.

I'd like a little more lift, would C59-675V be a good fit or would you recommend something else? I don't plan on running extended travel rear shocks and will likely only be adding more weight when filling up the rear with camping gear. It's also my daily so I don't want something too stiff for when it's not loaded. Thanks!

Hey bud,

Those probably wouldn't get you the extra lift you're looking for. The C59-677V would be more ideal, and they still have a lighter spring rate that your current springs, so you'd get more lift but also a more comfortable ride in the back.

So after some careful measuring, it seems I am at a 3" lift in the front and 2.5" in the rear, on average. Ideally would like to bring the rear down an inch, current numbers are 22.75" front, 24.25" rear. Pretty close to stock rake just a little lower in the rear. I just don't like the rake lol. Hardly ever carry stuff back there. Considering the C59-505 springs now, sound good??

505's should be about 23.25-23.5" when settled on a 4th Gen, so that would reduce your rake a good bit

After reading through some of this thread I decided to dive right in and go with a set of Dobinsons IMS59-50575 long travel shocks for the rear along with the C59-749V extreme springs. I'm running a drawer system that is probably close to 300lbs, along with a costal off-road, dual swing out bumper, 35" spare, roof rack with a 250lbs hardshell tent pretty much full time so I would say if anyone is carrying 700-800 lbs added weight it would be me lol.

Now the only question is are both of these part numbers actually in stock and ready to ship ?? :) :) Because I certainly can't wait to get these on and see what kind of added travel I can attain :)

Oh yeah, you'd need those heavy springs for sure!!

The shocks are in stock:
Dobinsons IMS59-50575 IFP LT Rear Shocks 4Runner FJ Cruiser GX470

The 749V's are only in stock in red right now:
Dobinsons C59-749V Rear Extremely HD Long Travel Coil Springs
No ETA for black, teals are coming in February.

Don't forget sway bar links, brake lines, and bump stops too at a minimum to run those shocks.

Ah, glad I asked then! :) The website did show some items as out of stock under certain colors but the spring color for these didn't trigger any messages so I just left it as teal. I certainly don't care for any color over the other so if red is the only in stock, red is what I'll take haha. I just sent an email with my order number attached seeing if I can get it switched over to whatever color spring is available.

thanks for the response on this, definitely looking to getting this on the rig!

Dobinsons really outdid themselves.. the shocks and springs are already delivered and on the car as of an hour ago. Everything went on smooth and fast, and first impression is really good. Now to put it through some flex testing

Hi Mike,
I have shocks on the way, but still need rear springs. Hoping to run the front in the 2.5 - 3" of lift range. I've pulled the factory spare, but will be adding a tire carrier with full-size spare (should be around 180-200lbs of constant weight). There will be more gear/weight added for trips, but not constant. Looking for the truck to sit level or a small rake, and would prefer the back not sag much below the front if at all when loaded for trips. Got anything in mind that would fit this description?
Thanks for all you do on here!

Hey man. You could run the 2" C59-325 springs that would sit at about 1.5" with the tire carrier on the back, and have the stance be quite level front to back. They handle the weight that most people add for a trip just fine, but it's all dependent on just how much you add of course.

The next step up C59-327's would sit at 2" of lift and are a stronger spring rate to support more weight better. If you think you'll have more constant weight added later, then those might be a better option.

In case anyone else needs some Long Travel inspiration for the rear :) easily picked up at least 2 inches of down travel and an inch of up travel over my last setup. Now to sort out my bump stop situation and I’ll be good to go.

Just curious.. is there a measurement of how much shock tube should be exposed at full bump ? My bump stops won’t work since I have my axle slid back almost 2 inches so I have to weld new mounts and wanted to make sure I get them as close to full compression as possible without bottoming out the shock but also not losing any up travel

Awesome flex!!!

The bump should start contacting with about 1" of shock shaft remaining, but it depends how soft the bumps are and how much they compress under load. You'd almost have to remove the coils and bottom it out to see when the shocks bottom out, and then put in the bumps to see how much they compress under the full weight of the vehicle to try and get a baseline. All of that isn't quick to do though.
