Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

For what it's worth, here's a couple pics of my V8 with the following

Front Springs: C59-302 - V8 - Stock front end load, 2" lift.
Front Shocks: GS59-221
Rear Springs: C59-505 - Stock rear end load, 1.5" lift.
Rear Shocks: GS59-705 - Twin Tube, suits 0-2.5" lift

Also put Freedom Offroad UCAs on.

Might go a bit bigger if I were doing it again, but I'm happy. I was aiming for stock+ with this suspension/tire combo, and keeping the slight factory rake. I achieved that goal. Have 3.6 deg caster on driver side, 4.1 deg caster on passenger. Good numbers thanks to the UCAs

Thanks for sharing!! That's a really nice setup, and I've used that as an example several times before. It's a great setup to refresh the suspension without raising it too much.

C59-314 front coils, 2.5" on a V8
GS59-221 front struts
C59-505 rear coils, 1.5"
GS59-701 rear shocks - because you'll be towing
UCA's
Rear sway bar links
Front sway bar drop is recommended, to realign it and get the geometry corrected

Just purchased all of the above, sans the UCA as I ordered the JBAs. Thanks so much for the help!

I've read that given my mileage I should replace the front lower ball joints, and front sway bar bushings while I'm in there. Is there anything else you'd recommend replacing?

Thanks for sharing, as that's basically exactly what I'm going for, minus the pizza cutters ;)

That paint color has always been my favorite 4runner color, I'm pretty jealous, I've got the gold with practically no clear coat left

Thanks for the order!!

Yeah, check the lower arm bushings and see if they're seized or not, and replace if needed. That would be about it.

Did you do the front and rear lean spacers? How many miles were on it after the pictures were taken?

Order Q’s

Looking at pulling the trigger on a new setup. 2008 V6 2wd. Daily driver, a lot of highway miles and TN,VA,NC forest roads once or twice a month. Currently I am sitting on OEM takeoff shocks, springs and UCAs from a 2016 4Runner with a daystar leveling spacer. These have almost 220k on them at this point and are in desperate need of replacement. The rear has never been able to handle any weight and I occasionally haul a small trailer or have tools in the back hatch. The entire truck floor and the doors have sound deadening (guessing 100lbs). I am planning on adding a winch in the next year or so. I have ordered new UCAs and LCAs from freedom off-road. I have a pretty aggressive drivers side lean.

Currently in my cart I have the following items:
C59-302
GS59-220

C59-327
GS59-701

Sway bar relocation
Front and rear lean correction

I believe this setup should give me roughly 3.5” in the front and 2.5” in the rear. I am not sure however if my math may not be adding up. Just hoping to check before pulling the trigger.

Also any idea of back order time for the 302s? Crikeymike

Hey bud, you don't have a 4WD, so you can't use that front combo. It would be about 4.5" on a 2WD, which is not allowed. I have a note on line 2 of our kit builder page about 2WD's.

https://exitoffroad.com/product/dobinsons-1-to-3-5-build-a-kit-toyota-4runner-5th-gen/

2WD models add 1" to listed coils height cause they weigh less, so use C59-296 with the GS59-220 for 3.5" on a 2WD.

The rest of the parts you listed look good.

Thanks Mike! I saw that note and was thinking I did my math wrong. Was trying to account for future front weight but thought I might be wrong. Placing an order soon!

Hey Mike,

Hopefully this post is still being followed.

I've got an 04 4Runner w/V8 227k miles and the setup I'm looking at is below. I just ordered the parts through my local off-road shop. They are doing the install. It's probably overbuilt, but the labor is the same so I figured I'd go for upgraded hardware (buy once, cry once theory). Use case right now is mostly daily driver, like everyone else. But we live in Colorado and do some minor exploring, camping, fishing etc. Also, my son is 15 and just starting to drive so expecting in the next few years he'll be driving this vehicle more as he goes and has fun with friends. I'm only going with a 2"/1" ish lift for now with 265/70/R17 tires but in a few years we might go up to 285/27/R17 (I just wish a spare that size would fit under the rear).

I used to pull a camper but these days the biggest load will be a 4 bike hitch mount rack and if camping, the three of us will load up the T4R and even throw a canoe on top.

Oh, and the shop just called this morning and said the IMS59-50220 are backordered for months, so they are 'upgrading' me to the IMS59-50574 extended travel at no extra cost. I think I'll lose .5 inch or so of upstroke/compression with that. Would you be concerned with that compromise as a daily driver?

I went ahead and sprung for the billet UCA too. Yeah, maybe overkill for now, but if I decide to go with bigger tires and more lift in the future, it will just be adjustments, not all new hardware and installation costs. Is that a good strategy or did I over think and overbuild the whole thing to my own financial and comfort detriment? :)

Oh, getting my lower bushings replaced too for good measure.

Hey bud

Yeah this thread is still alive!!

Yes that combo of parts will work. The 574 struts are an ideal sub for the 220s with the lower bushing change. You won't notice a difference.

You'll get the best alignment with the adjustable UCA's. Yeah a bit overkill but they'll still work great and will last forever.

Hey Mike, I hope all is well in your world!

I recently purchased another 4th gen for my wife (Her Kia Soul is on its last legs, :) ) and I am looking to give it a refresh.

The last you and I spoke a few years ago I got the perfect outcome on my V8, with this 2WD V6 I want to go a little bigger. Thinking 3 inches and even all around (A mild squat preferred versus rake), and wanted your thoughts before pulling the trigger.

With the full 3 inches I know I will need UCAs, and likely Panhard correction as well.

Edit: I do not plan to have much if any constant load on either end.

Front:
- C59-314
- GS59-221

Rear:
- C59-325
- GS59-745

Thanks in advance, and appreciate all that you do. Cheers mate!

Hey bud

Yeah, I'm doing well thanks. Thanks for jumping back on here.

Ok, a 2WD V6 model. Those lift more than a 4x4, so the front parts will be different.

C59-238 lifts 2" on a 2WD, 1" on a 4x4, so you'll need these
GS59-220 ext travel struts add 1", so you'll have 3" of total with good travel up and down.

C59-325 and GS59-745 will work well on the rear. Being 2" of lift, you won't need the panhard rod, but you should add the extended sway bar links.

Just wanted to follow-up that the Dobinsons IMS is great on these vehicles. I don't see a way to post images directly into the forum (it seems to want a URL link which I don't have) so I'm just going to put a link to a reddit post I made in case anyone wants to see.

This looks great! The Colorado backdrop always helps too ;)

Is there any chance you could measure the hub to fender distances on front and rear? I've never had OEM measurements so I'm using what I can to guide my impending coil purchase. It looks like you have a little rake, which I want to keep, so this would be super helpful.

Correct, this forum doesn't host photos, you have to post them somewhere online and share the URL to embed them into the forum. It's like 15+ year old software they're running here. LOL. People use Flickr and similar sites now to link their photos.

4Runner looks great!!

Looks fantastic! Really similar to mine here: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3901312-post1279.html, though you've got nicer wheels and the fancier struts.

If anyone wants to see results that maintain some of the stock rake, they can compare my setup to yours.

Your front axle to fender was 22, rear 23. Mine was was 22.5 and 23.5 respectively. So there's a few ways to get to similar results.
