Does anybody recognize this mount? (possible Yakima or Thule)

Haha, no. There are still several in the family though. My sister has a '97 and my brother a '96. This one with the mounts is a friends.

It's a Yakima "landing pad" (probably the landing pad 1) and to my knowledge will require a set of control towers and crossbars. Check this link ... Yakima › Shop › Rack Systems › Factory Tracks or Rails

Not that it matters since you already have the landing pads, but yes they are the type 1 (there are 12 types).



Quicksilvr, if you want to see lengths of crossbars on a 4runner, I have the 48" bars and Hepar has the 58" bars..

And in case you are looking at the Fairings, I have the 44" right over the windshield. You will want a smaller one if you put it back by the roof rails.

The towers are universal. Its the base of the landing pads that are different to fit different types of rails.

The more I look at Yakima bases, the more I DON'T think it's a yakima base. It's very similar, but all the bases I've seen are enough different that I don't think it's compatible.

Hmmm ... I think you're right. But I've been using Yakima racks for almost 30 years and this base looks like a Yakima product. Maybe an older base/tower combo?

I'd say it looks like a Yakima landing pad.

Easiest way to tell would be to see if a Yakima Control Tower fits on it. If it does, that's what it is.

I have the landing pads on mine because I don't like to run a roof rack when I don't need it (that's why I took the factory rack off.) There are little snap-on covers you can get for the landing pads so they look a little cleaner when you aren't running a rack.

I sent a quick email to Yakima, with a picture of the landing pad attached. I figured it might help out someone else in the future too if we can identify the landing pad.

So yeah...Yakima totally rocks. They responded to my question within like 2 hours.



Here's what Marcy @ Yakima says:

"Those bases are for a discontinued product called the Locking RailRider. They are completely usable, but you would have to find a set of RailRiders or LockingRailRiders. Otherwise, you can purchase our Control Towers with Landing Pad 1's to fit into your track system.

I wanted the widest set of bars that would still be less than the width of the Runner itself. The width with the flares is 66", so 65" is just under. Having wider bars is nice for two reasons. It's easy to mount surfboards side by side (a lot of NW boards are either stubby wide fish boards or big wide longboards). And I also like having a spot to hang my wetsuit from to let it dry.
