I haven't signed anything yet but when my 2018 trd pro comes,, the dealer wants me to get Toyota ECP warranty. It's confusing but it'll give me warranty for 5-7 years. Does a person really need this on a Toyota? They r pretty good quality to begin with. To me it seems like a scam. They make it sound like u get free oil changes and now the 4Runner only needs 1 oil change a year. It's like $2800 for 7 year ECP

Well I thought about this when I got my 2016. I hate extended warranties especially on a Toyota but stuff happens. I ended up getting it and have often thought about cancelling it and getting some money back but have not done that yet. I got it because of the other things on the vehicle. Things like the window regulators are $800 a piece and they do go out sometimes. Also the 4Runner has 5 computers and stuff could happen. So despite having a bad feeling about it, I did get the extended warranty.
Another thing you can do it just wait and get the extended warranty when your vehicle's factory warranty is going to expire. Anyway that's my story, hope it helps.

they told me that I cant wait till the factory warranty is about to expire. They said I have 30 days after buying/picking up the vehicle to decide yay or nay.Is this true? and are all the Toyota warranties called ECP? or is there another warranty u can get? also if u read the fineprint it doesn't even sound like the engine is covered after 3 years even on the platinum coverage. I don't have the papers in front of me but look under the individual groups and there is a lot not covered.

That seems crazy expensive. I’m not sure how it differs in Canada, but I work for a service contract company in the states and an exclusionary coverage option (most comprehensive coverage available), plus maintenance (LOF’s) is about half as much as they’re quoting you. There is no difference between a Toyota contract versus an aftermarket as long as it’s backed by an A rated insurance carrier.
Also, in the states you can wait to decide until just before your factory warranty expires, but again, not sure about Canadian regulations.

Selling waranties is where most businesses make a large portion of their profits with ALL sold products because they are rarely used. If it were a used vehicle maybe, but I didn't when I bought mine used because I bought a Toyota for its reliability.
I'd say pass on the warranty and keep your money.

I got a 6yr/60k miles with my 15 with 32k on it, so I'm covered until 92k miles bumper to bumper. It was $1100. Dealer also sells every vehicle with a lifetime power train warranty. Figure if something behind the dash goes out once its paid for itself

I had the Fidelity warranty through SE Toyota on my 2001 3rd gen and my 2007 FJ Cruiser.
Total crap, they kept insisting on making all the repairs with remanufactured parts.

If you want the ext warranty talk them down just like you would negotiate the price of the car. I paid like $1500 for the ext warranty. If you plan on doing oil changes yourself or not taking it in to get the tire rotated, then its probably a waste of money.
The 24hr roadside assistance could come in handy should you ever need to use it. I think they'll tow you like 100miles to a dealership for free. But again if you have AAA or something you're kind of paying twice for the same thing.
It's one of those things that Id rather have and not need then need and not have. So the peace of mind if worth basically a $5 increase on my loan.

You also have to read the contracts carefully. Not everything is covered. There was a story a few years ago about a man who owned a Hyundai with their famous warranty. A regulator that controlled a coolant valve failed and the engine overheated and seized. He had bumper to bumper coverage but the regulator was not part of the coverage therefore Hyundai would not honor the warranty and he had to pay thousands of dollars for a new engine out of pocket. Always read the fine print first before signing.

You can buy the same warranty from other Toyota dealers anytime before you reach 3 year 36k end of bumper to bumper warranty. It costs about $900 from one of the dealers who sells on here. That price includes about $2,000 of profit for the dealer.
This is the price chart I was given about a year ago. I can put you in touch with the dealer if you're interested. I have no affiliation with them other than having bought my warranty though them. It's the Toyota Care Platinum warranty - from Toyota. No aftermarket stuff.

For what its worth, I just picked up my 2018 4runner this past weekend. They tried to sell me that stuff, just was not interested. Car has 3 year full coverage, 5 year powertrain, I was told. Good enough for me. After spending big bucks, did not want to get nickel and dime'd for more.

Toyota has a team of very well educated actuaries that understand statistics beyond what I ever will. They price the extended warranty based on the odds of the vehicle needing a warranty repair. In order for me to “win” with my warranty I have to bet that my vehicle will be more unreliable than these think it will be. So essentially, I’m betting that my vehicle will breakdown more often than a staff of very well educated statisticians think it will, at least based on he predicted cost of repairs.
You can’t think of t as anything but insurance. If you literally could not afford a repair beyond the warranty period, then it might Be worth it. However, it would be a better financial decision to skip the warranty and just make sure you’ve got some funds saved up for life’s little mishaps.

That’s seems like a lot. I got it because of piece of mine. I have had Toyota’s for a very long time. Never takin the extended warranty. This I did. Plan on keeping it for long time. If I decide to trade up to a newer Pro I can transfer. I did 10 years or 100000 miles. Covers everything. Premium warranty. Like $1900.
