last question, are there any aftermarket radios that are a plug and play that i wont have to order some special wiring harness adapter?

basically, i am not savvy when it comes to wiring/electrical stuff and am in need of a new radio/cd/et cet... would love to get one of the gps radio things if i could find one cheap enough!!

Well the whole reason for a wiring harness for any vehicle is to make an aftermarket cd player plug-n-play. There isn't much electical stuff you have to deal with. The information is out there I'm sure if you look hard enough.

As far as factory radios go, I think most are factory plug and play in our generation but don't quote me on that.

not real sure on the plug and play stuff but the only way I can see installing a new CD player or anything or that nature would be b/c you are color blind, its pretty basic match up the colors and plug in the antenna wire and your good to go. Goodluck

I'm not sure on the deck in question, but yes there are aftermarket decks that will plug right in. Specifically Eclipse decks. I'm not sure if all of them do, but I know that at least some of them do. I found mine for under $300. Direct plug and go. Don't be afraid of having to wire a deck though. The aftermarket wiring harnesses make things a breeze.

I know that when I put a 2002 6 disc JBL Toyota changer in my 99 Limited, I had to buy the 20 pin amplifier vs. the 15pin that was found in 1999 and before. I would imagine that the pin setup is much different now, but the Scion Pioneer works, so who knows. If we could see the back, I would have a better idea.

It looks nice, but it is weird that it is earmarked to go in a 2012 factory 4runner.

when i said "plug and play" i simply meant 15 pin to 15 pin 20 pin to 20 pin et cet...

different vehicles have different ones and i just wasnt sure. hoping to run into someone that had done it before which i am sure there a plenty of folks in my shoes. for some reason my cd player takes the cd then spits it out... does it on any cd (burnt or original). it doesnt matter though... i need to get something newer so i can use my iphone/ipod (which probably wasnt even a twinkle in steve jobs eye when this truck was built).

this is my 2nd day of owning a toyota and obviously have quite a bit to learn.

I have an alpine cda-9885 (which has an ipod/iphone cable) in my 98 SR5. you can get a vehicle specific wiring harness for under $10 at most places. the harness wires match up color for color to any aftermarket radio. then you unplug the 2 clips from the 4runner amplifier and the aftermarket radio will plug right in. Also, with a single din after market radio, the stock toyota radio mount will bolt right up to most after market radios. Well the stock radio mount bolted right up to my Alpine anyways
