Does anyone run their 4Runner in real cold (below -25º F)

finished installing my pan heaters. ended up one I ordered was wrong so went to the local auto parts and got another. same price as amazon.

used 100 watt on oil pan, 50 watt on tranny pan....that's what local suggested.

the replacement one for oil pan did not have stick on tape , parts guy said they don't stick long in this climate.he sold 3 different ones,.so had to use one that you smear silicone on, hold in place till that dries,( duct tape, then removed) then seal edges...so turned into a 2 day project, prob would have been quicker in a heated garage...
plugged in and they both heated up, could tell in unheated unfinished garage.

now she is parked back outside...( garage gets used for other toys )
.-3 today and a strong wind

plugged in for half hour , went out to start, all was warm, started right up

frozen brakes

have you guys delt with that ?

This time of year I do not use the parking brake, seen them freeze.

Yesterday was minus 5 plus a strong wind. Went out to go to town, and my break pedal was rock hard,,,backed up, no brakes. Hit the pedal a few times, moved back and forth, then the break pedal finally moved and I had brakes.

Im running synthetic brake fluid and it was not frozen.

A month or so ago , I did a winter inspection, no leaking seals in back.

While in all my years I have lived in different climates and with many different cars. My 4runner has been in snow and cold every year the past 4 years but rarely down to zero. But 4-5 months of several feet of snow and sub 30 temps were normal. Never had them freeze up before.



ideas ? or just part of the beast for the 4runners in these temps down to -30

It's most likely the Vacuum Check Valve on the brake booster part no. 44730-60060.
It could have had moisture in it.
I sprayed the inside with silicon lube last winter after it acted up.
Haven't had trouble since.
It does get your attention though!

well I just so happen to have another check valve I pulled out of a parts car....and it acted up again this morning, so I will give it a try.
just got to find the part ...if not Ill get a new one.

when you said sprayed inside....do you mean in the check valve....maybe I will do that too even into the replacement

Yes, I sprayed in the check valve.

thanks again...I had brakes today after switching check valves and spraying with silicone last night.. was only -1 this morning, but no wind and had brakes from the get go.
we will see how it goes in a few weeks when it gets below -20

getting a new one anyway since replacement is at least 19 years old...so added to my future shopping list ( that wont happen for a while)

I've only been there for 20 years, but it seems to be. We had brief periods of -50 C when I first got there, we don't seem to anymore. Now we might get -40 or -45 as the winter low and that doesn't always happen. The cold of Jack London and Robert Service seems to be a thing of the past and maybe that's OK.

Indeed. I haven't seen anything in the -60s for 40 years.
