Does anyone still use a Reel Mower?

Had one growing up as a kid/teenager. It was punishment for what ever the violation/offense was. This may not seem like a big deal but when you have three archers to mow. It sucked well, yeah! I will say the yard looked great after. Where did you find one anyhow?

You can find them online apparently. We have a tiny front yard and a pretty small back yard as well in this rental. I had a lawn guy in FL but haven't found one here yet and didn't want to mess with the gas, oil, and storage. Plus the grass here seems pretty thin and tame compared to that crazy St. Augustine crap we had in FL. I may have to give this a shot.
 
There is one in the temp townhouse I am living in. I used it and for small yards it is just fine especially rentals. Only gripe is if their are any tall weeds you will have to get a run at them and go over them numerous times. I abandoned the idea and went back to my gas mower.
 
They're ok if you keep them sharp. Upsides are no dealing with stale gas and clogged carb in the spring, and they're quiet and not-smelly. The downside is obvious - they're work. :D
 
Keep it sharp, mow twice a week and you'll love it. Dull blade and 3 weeks without mowing, forget about it :spy:

This. My neighbor has one. His highschool son uses it as punishment - otherwise they use the riding mower.

We bought one from HD a couple years back to use on our zoysia lawn. Didn't even make a full pass along the short side of the lawn before we reboxed it and returned it to the store.
 
My parents have one for their tiny lawn. It's a pain and needs to be sharpened but perfect for how little the lawn is. Stores easily and like others have said no prep or stale gas.

I did break it once though and had to weld a brace on. What a PITA but its stronger now.
 
I bought an old one at the thrift store for my small lawn and i works but like qjake said, if it gets too tall, I bust out the weed wacker.

Edit: another reason to love Amz... I just noticed this was $23 more expensive when I ordered it and it shipped out yesterday. I contacted them and they immediately refunded me the $23 without hassle.

I had to use a reel mower for years, as a kid. It wasn't for punishment, it was just the mower the folks had. It was a fairly large yard, too. If they are kept sharp and adjusted properly, they do a better job of cutting, then any gas-powered rotary mower.

I guess it would be considered child abuse these days, to make today's fat-ass kids get out and mow the yard with a reel mower.

The reel mower arrived today. I put it together in about 10 minutes and we took it out back. It was actually kind of fun. My wife even enjoyed using it. So while she was taking her turn I ordered a second one and a sharpening kit. I got the medium sized one and thought it would be fine, but having two will let us both go at it and cut the time in half.

I couldn't imagine using it back in FL though... thicker grass must be a real pain.
