Does color impact resale value?

I remember back in 2001 the only way they could sell certain Acura's with the reddish copper color was to use ebay and get the price low enough where someone could have it repainted. Don't these guys ever use any surveys or focus groups ?

When I was shopping for my 4runner, I was originally looking for the metallic blue, but when I found the salsa red one, I really liked it. I think the thing i like most about it is that it is rare. I see alot of the black, white, and silvers, but not too many reds. I also found that getting some mud on it makes it look even better! :guitar3:

Or keep her clean :roadkill:

i agree with tomhaney1 & uneek ,those colors being somewhat rare & are one reason why i like them, i believe that some colors are easier to get in certain parts of the country. example: salsa red in the north east, etc. black is my #1 favorite, but the others arent bad either.the question on resale is cool, but as far as SR not being a dudes color, thats whats assanine.

I love your rig man! Its an inspiration :bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo:

I actually had to search out my 2008 Salsa Red, only 1 dealer in the three county area had one. Luckily, he was willing to deal.

Sometimes I wear a pink shirt when I drive it, drives the women wild! lol

Thats great! Haha! Its definitely gotta be a chick magnet :reddance:

I sense that I get a lot more looks in my '08 Salsa Red than when my '00 Desert Dune (silver with a hint of tan) T4R was new. It's a real eye catcher.

The question about it being a "dude's color" was nothing but apparently a poorly worded joke. I'm a middle aged man with a couple of kids, a destroyed spine, and a gut the size of a beer keg. I stopped trying to be cool years ago. What do I care if it's an appropriate color for dudes? I was just trying to spark a conversation, and I'm glad to see I did. Basically I was wondering why I see so few of that color. I think the explanations here have been very good.

Thanks for answering. I am sorry I came off as asinine. It really wasn't my intention.

Just to chime in, I was looking for red, silver, or gray. I think the red is nice! I got silver as it was the only V8 4x4 SE available in Vegas. If I had my pick of the three, I don't know, have to see them together. I see a lot of silver and white ones, have not seen a red in person here.

Same here. I was looking for dark blue, black or (maybe) white. I found a great deal on a Galactic Grey '06, and I really didn't want the color, as it's nearly identical to my wife's car, and we didn't want to be that couple. Ultimately I bought it as it had most every option I was looking for and the price and mileage were right. I guess it's growing on me...

I was wondering this myself. However I was in the same spot you were. It was white, which was the last color I wanted. However it had the options, and the price was right. I ended up taking it home.

LOL, right, but why do you think there were less made? That's right, because not many people choose that color to buy. That includes dealership personnel when ordering to stock their lot or individuals who actually ordered their own 4Runner, made to order. The point is that Salsa Red is somewhat rare among 4th gen 4Runners. I guess that can be good or bad depending upon one's point of view.

True, I don't know what came first- the cart or the horse? These idiots often use focus groups to decide on which colors are given priority and options. If they would have started with equal numbers in the beginning and then adjusted them I would have to agree that would be supply and demand; however, when they decide to limit certain colors (for whatever reason) that is only a weak correlation to demand, IMO.

bottom line is you have to be happy with it, can't really worry too much what others think. You will be the one driving it around, and I'm guessing you would like to enjoy driving it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I do like this particular color.

Both my wife and I like the red. It looks great when it's polished really well!

I like my silver. Tho there's a bunch of 'em out there, i don't want to draw attention to those who want to vandalize my rig.

I think what you're saying is true, but only when it comes to choosing the available colors offered, not the quantity of each color. In other words, we know that the staple colors (like black and white) will ALWAYS be offered on every mass produced vehicles. But it is up to the manufacturer to choose other colors that will appeal to the masses. That's where focus groups, surveys, and other marketing techniques come into play. Once the color choices are made, there are normally no limits to how many of each color vehicle are produced. That is dictated by orders, both from dealerships and individual purchasers of the vehicle. And of course dealers know which colors are more popular than others, so they tend to shy away from ordering the unpopular colors. So I'd say that Salsa Red is a semi-rare color not because Toyota decided to produce them in limited numbers, but much more because there really isn't a big demand for the color. Think about it--if it became a hugely popular color, we'd see a ton of them everywhere.

Interesting... I guess I didn't factor in the influence of the dealership. I still believe this isn't direct supply/demand. The dealerships err on the side of caution and order more "mainstream" colors. There could be a demand but people are forced into buying a certain color due to availability.

This is what I was looking for. Actual numbers of supply demand. I think Toyota (dealerships or otherwise) are misrepresenting demand with 4Runner colors. While white and silver dominate, gray, black, red, and blue (to a slightly lesser extent) are equal in sales. I see these colors more predominant among other manufacturers but not with Toyota. This is the discrepancy I think needs to be addressed.

Well, if you owned a car dealership, wouldn't you order a good selection of variousl colors, but more of the popular colors and less of the unpopular ones? That's all they are trying to do. BTW, when it comes to our 4Runners, a HUGE majority buy off the lot instead of ordering directly. So I think the orders dealerships place to maintain their inventory are a big part of the "demand". There's really no supply side issue because none of the 4Runner colors are limited in any way. If 500,000 people ordered a 2009 Dorado Gold 4Runner, that's exactly what Toyota would produce. So it's really not a supply & demand issue, it's more just demand alone. The supply part of the equation only comes into play when someone is buying off the lot and feels that he/she has to choose a color already in stock. Personally, I'd just find a dealer that had my color instead of settling, but not everyone does that. That said, I don't really think anyone is "forced" into buy a particular color, but rather they decide to settle because they are unwilling to find the color they want if their local dealership doesn't have it.
