Does this look bad?

Searching for a GEN4 T4R to build (wife has a 2011 SR54x4) and I came upon this little Gem the other day being offered at $11900.

Salesman kept telling me it wasnt that bad and it all I would have to do is spray some wd40 on all the nuts and bolts before installing a lift kit
I should have taken a picture of the driver side lower control arm bolt/nut, you couldnt even tell the nut was there is was so corroded. When I popped the hood entire motor was pitted, the alternator looked like hell and the brake lines going into the master cylinder looked like battery terminals...not to mention just about every piece of hardware had some stage of corrosion on it....needless to say I just said not interested and left.

The search continues...

Looks like salt cancer. One of the worst things a person can do, to a car, is showboat it in ocean surf. Salt water kills metal. Good luck finding a used T4R :)

looks like mine, a 2003 that has spent every winter in New England.

Yeah.

OP, you're in Tx. Just buy one that was owned locally and is rust free. Edit: looks like that's what you're doing.

I looked at 3 at the same lot when I bought mine. The one I went to see was a white '07 limited that spent 31k of it's miles as a fleet car in Chicago. Total rustbucket. Bought an '05 for slightly less money that was owned in Va/NC with no obvious rust and I'm super stoked, even though I didn't get a facelifted model.

The salesman will tell you anything, but think about the corrosion inside the rails and places you cannot see if it's like that on the surface. Just my opinion, but if I lived in Tx or Ca, I'd never bother with an out-of-state traveller. I've gotten 4 cars from those states and they were all clean as a whistle compared to that.

Yea this one spent a lot of time in Wisconsin and Illinios....Im definately weary of anything that came out of the north. But Im an trying to trade in my Tacoma so I have to go through a dealer. Most dealers buy thier cars from auction and there are a lot of cars in Auction that come from the north (so Im told) because they are a lot cheaper, this is probably why.....

Im in no rush and Im am being picky as hell since I will be the one wrenching on it....There is a Blue 05 T4R SE 4X4 V8 in Dallas I am interested in, will go looking at it next week...wish me luck!

What dealership was that at?

I had better luck finding mine on the SW side of town. Check out Sterling McCall Toyota or Lexus. I bought mine at the Lexus dealership back in '12. If they dont have one on the lot, they do a pretty good job of finding one at one of their other dealerships.

Definitely keep looking, I just bought a 2005 here in New England with significantly less rust of that for $11k.

I had to look at a lot of rusty junk before I found this one so I feel your pain.

Good luck!

We bought my wife's RAV4 there in November as well. They do have some really good deals sometimes.

Mine looks a little better than that. Expect to be cutting a lot of bolts off. BS on just spraying some WD40 on the bolts. I got mine (2004 SR5 4x4) for $9800. Im starting to learn why. Mechanically she is solid though.

Me personally wouldnt even risk it especially with us being in texas you can find plenty of them that have little to no rust and if your going to put lifts and build on it you'll regret it everytime you have to try and take something off I would pass on that one if it was me.

THANKS! I may have to take u up on that. But ur sig says FT worth, the one Im looking at is on the east side of Dallas. Im waiting on the carfax and to see if the timing belt has been changed. I may be up there Thursday if it all checks out....I requested pics of the under carriage but we will see how that goes.

ya im in fort worth a few dealers to check out that ive have had good luck with is autonation, lynn smith chevy, and toyota of fort worth but if you do find one that isnt to far away i wouldnt mind taking a look for ya it would only be a 30 min drive for me vs 4+ hours for you so I know i would be extremely pissed to drive all the way here to find out they were just trying to get ya in the dealership and wasnt what they described.

before I bought my T4R back in December up here in Chicago, there was one for sale 4-1/2 hours away at a Toyota dealer. I had them takes tons of pics of the undercarriage to prove to me there was little to no rust. They did without hesitation.

Hope your buying experience goes well :)
