Best info I've read suggests a possible facelift for 2020 and not a real model change until 2022-3ish.
 
Last 2 or 3yrs people have been positive with proof the 4runner update was imminent. Believe it when I see it. The 2016+ Tacoma drivetrain update wasn't that great. I bought the 5th Gen for its reliability, definitely not for the gadgets.
 
I'm fine with the 5th gen 4Runner. Yeah newer is always cooler but you can't beat the 5th gen reliability. I'm waiting for my 2011 Trail to rack up enough miles for me to trade it in for a newer 5th gen. It'll be a long ways away though

From the article posted... riiiiiiiight. I'm no expert, but I'd say that over 100K more units sold than the closest competitor would mean it's a leader in the segment.
 
But it has to stay that way. I guess people dont like the 3.5 or the automatic too well.

Toyota is rolling out all new models either whole new restyle like the camry trd or new drivetrain like supra, also new revamped rav4, toyota tacoma and the hilux surf ( not for usa) also a new heritage model land cruiser which is basically different wheels and badges and nixing the third row seats. So to sumise that 6th Gen 4runner in not far behind is a good possibility.
 
Lots of complaints about the 3.5 liter, but I think most are from those that added weight doing mods. I've heard that the seats are not comfortable as well.

New Ford Ranger with the 2.3 turbo is faster. I am pretty sure the Colorado is faster too. Not all that much faster though, Tacoma seems adequate. I don't think most people buy it for the acceleration.

But, the more people that buy it, the more people will complain about it. Per vehicle sold, Tacoma probably has less complaints.

Yeah - I think there will be another facelift before 6th gen on the TNGA-F platform. I think at that time the Tacoma and 4R will unify again as a shared platform. It appears the Tundra will be the first TNGA-F model. And the spy shots suggest it is moving to a coil spring multi-link rear like the LC200. My guess is that all TNGA-F models will be very similar to the 150/200 platform. Coil and link rear solid axle. Uneven a-arm front suspension. Boxed frame. Etc.

I doubt there's any meaningful difference between the current platform and TNGA-F in design or layout. Maybe body mount location?? Otherwise it's basically going to be the same thing again. The only real difference will be body, interior, drive train. So all of those could be changed either during a facelift on the same platform or a new platform. The big changes come to the Tacoma and Tundra moving from leaf to coil springs in the rear. My guess is that Toyota won't change the primary body structure at all, only the plastics for the generation 5.3. As a result I also do not think we'll see electrification before the 6th gen. I'm betting that there will not be a hybrid or EV model until at least 2023+. I really really really hope they either offer a v8 in 5.3, but I'm not holding my breath. At best I'd guess it'll be 4.0L and 6AT. If we're lucky 4.0L and 8AT. If we're unlucky 3.5L/6AT (which is what I'd predict it'll have).

That's precisely why my father bought a 2nd Gen used this year, but that doesn't mean that the 3rd Gen isn't leading the segment. It's further proof that the echo chamber that is the internet is not reality.
 
Just please keep a manual transmission whatever they do when they update the powertrains!

Currently have a 2014 GMC sierra and the only reason I'd trade it in someday would be to have a manual Tacoma or a manual Gladiator. (the convertible aspect of the Gladiator would be fun, just don't trust it mechanically nearly like I would the Taco or my current GMC).
