I don't know if this is normal or if this is because it's broken but im at 18.4 and that number hasn't budged one bit no matter how i drive.
Does your average mpg ever fluctuate?

That's probably why then. I never reset it. How do you reset it?

Using the display button on the steering wheel. When you get to the MPG window press and hold the button down. This resets it to 0. At least it does on my basic Trail. I'm not sure what model you have.

And? You have data for several thousand miles before and after you did this with all documentation on fuel type, temperature, locations and everything else needed to substantiate a statement like this?

Eh... I've seen/read too many articles that basically support the fact that all Lucas Oil Stabilizer does is thicken the oil beyond it's SAE and SN ratings. Which at that point is not a very good idea. You're talking about modifying 0w-20 oil to be thicker than what was specified to work in an engine designed for 0w-20 oil to flow through it.
It might work well in older vehicles with high mileage and looser clearances, but I'd want to see more extensive testing and analysis like was done in this old website:

But basically from everything I've seen it "stabilizes" the oil by thickening it, which is maybe something you want in an old motor with loose clearances and a splash oil based lubrication system. Not something you want in a modern, tightly toleranced engine designed for a thin synthetic oil for the best flow, pressure, and cooling effects when running.
I'm not saying Lucas Oil Stabilizer is garbage, I'm just saying that I'm very hesitant to use it in a modern engine because what they advertise sounds too much like adding gear oil to a rattling engine to quiet it down without the gear oil smell. So I'd like to see more data to either support their claims or disprove them (much in the same was that I have not yet found significant proof on what WS ATF actually is and isn't and whether or not any non-Toyota fluid is truly compatible with WS ATF)

hmmm seems this is one of those topics where some agree and some do not on the product. Either way everyone is entitled to an opinion, I use it in all of my vehicles that I use personally and am happy with the results and will continue to do. Best of luck with using it or not.

Here is my take on the subject. The reason it doesn't change is that, statistically, the more miles that you put on a single MPG log, the harder it is to change without a drastic increase or decrease in MPG. If you change fuel quality, or increase your tire pressure and get a 0.5 MPG bump because of it, it will take a long time to show up on a trip log that has 10k miles already on it. BUT if you add tires, and a lift and drop 1-2 MPG, that effect will show up sooner. If you calculate tank to tank you will see a more reactive MPG readout. Here is my example. Almost 20k in recorded MPG's.

Its funny my girlfriend has said many times do you want to be right or do you want to be happy. Either way we can agree to disagree, I am happy with experience with my vehicle and you are happy with your data.

We just picked up our new '16 Trail a week ago and ran our first long day trip this past weekend. A pleasant 250 mile jaunt, uphill into the mountains of BC on the twisties of Hwy 1, across on the even twistier Hwy 8 to Merritt and home on the 4 lane Coquihalla. Filled the tank and found we had averaged 18.4 mpgUS. That's about what our '15 Wrangler would do on the same trip, but it would be slower and less comfortable. We love our 4Runner! Ted'nBetty
