Doing a custom audio setup '05 4Runner.

Ok, I have planned out my setup to be Alpine everything, price to performance ratio is excellent and I have always trusted their name. But I have a few questions before I throw down my cash and buy all this stuff.

1. I've looked up the speaker sizes for the 4runner and everything says both the front and rear are 6.5 inch, is this correct? Because looking at the door it seems shaped for a 6x9. Is the front and rear speakers both 6 1/2 or not? If not what are they?

2. People's experience with Mobile video head units. The alpine iva-d310 is what Im looking at now, is there a better one I should look at, or rather is there one you think is better for some reason? I dont pretend to be an expert on mobile video head units.

3. Where is the best place to get a hold of auto carpet that closest matches the Sport editions stock carpet? I am going to be constructing a custom sealed sub enclosure/amplifier rack and I need some auto carpet that matches the stock carpeting.

I think thats about it... if anyone has any other input please post up.

Also to add to my post:

Dynamat... do you think it is worthwhile to dynamat the doors and cargo area, or not? I mean I know people who swear by the stuff, and others who say it is a huge waste of money. I can get the Xtreme stuff like half price and do the doors and the whole cargo area and all but is it really worth it? I want to know because I'd want to install it at the ssame time as doing the audio install since the panels will all be off anyways.

Good to hear. I've been trying to figure out what I want to de to upgrade my 2005 Sport withy the basic radio and speakers. See my thread here for some of my questions and the answers I've gotten so far.

What I have been able to glean from my research is that stock is 6 x 9 but the standard replacement is 6.5. Apparently the door is very shallow so you have to be pretty choosey about what you install. Crutchfield says they don't have anything that fits but other folks here know otherwise.

I've been told that Alpine's quality has been slipping. I hear a lot of noise about how good Eclipse stuff is.

Going to be a fun ride! We'll both figure this out over time. I just have to go a little slower because I'm on a budget. I'm thinking 6.5 Infinity components for the front with the tweeter up where the "squawker" is now and 6.5 Infinity rear. I love the advantages of the Eclipse nav head unit because it is essentially plug and play (including the steering wheel controls) but I'll have to save a few pennies for that one! But it is my first choice right now.

I have pretty much the same sound set up in both my cars but one with full dynamat and the other with none. I think it makes a WORLD of difference. Granted the sound stages in both trucks are slightly different (one without the dynamatting is an RX300). But I find that I drive my 4Runner much more because even with the same speaker setup the sound is different. If it helps: I picked up a bulk pack originally and ended up getting a second bulk pack to put two layers in certain areas. Two layers on the firewall, all the doors, the cargo bay and passenger rear 1/4 panel. And a single layer for the floors. If you are going to build your own subwoofer box, you can usually get carpeting from any place that does installs, they usually have reams of the standard colors.

As for the mobile media unit; are you planning on going NAV as well? If so, the Pioneer AVICD1 seems to be the most functional out there right now. It has two front load slots; one direct CD slot and one direct DVD slot. This way you don't have to get the separate DVD-NAV unit to install somewhere else.

However, the running counterargument is how much are you willing to sacrifice sound for convenience. The pioneer has a ton of really convenient features, the double slots and XM Traffic NAV but it doesn't have audio time correction. Most if not all of the higher end Alpine units have the time correction feature. And time correction is another one of those things where if you have it you can't live without it.

As far as the '05s go they are 6x9s in the front so you are going to need speaker plates to install 6.5 speakers. I did not seem to have that much of a space issue as some other people in the forum, but I don't know how much deeper the alpine's sit than the MB Quarts.

Just make sure that what you are thinking about for 6x9 will fit. I haven't opened up my door yet but others here have seemed to stay away from 6x9 for various reasons.

Check the various threads on speakers. There's a lot of good info.

A 6.5 will have better overall sound quality over a 6x9.

Toyota used a 6x9 to get more bass response out of it.

If you're going to put a sub in there, go with a 6.5's

I would have to agree especially if you are dropping a 500 watt 12 in there. To balance out the sound you might want to go with a 6.5 that has super tight midbass and tweeters that scream.

I have the type R 12 sub right now.

I have the alpine V12 monoblock hooked up to it right now.

It hits very hard

The fronts are 6x9's.... the rears are 6 1/2's

Definitely a big difference. By the way.... BE VERY CAREFUL with the DOORS! the door panels are VERY SOFT! I propped one up and the door panel fell over onto the concrete and got scraped up really bad!

Alpine makes 6.5 components, 5x7 components... no 6x9 components..... that's a downfall......

Yes true, the sub would take care of the bass in the back... However when you take it to car shows and do sql. you want the staging to be all in the front. As if the sound came from the front. The sound also has to be balanced... or flat all throughout...

So that might help you out.

Hey otter,

Does the D310 need that interconnect cable to be able to control the V12 amp? it says the D300 does, and the D310 is kind of next generation so I dont know if it does or not? I assumed it does and ordered it so hopefully it does need it.
I'll be sure to post pictures when I get it all done, I might take some whilst I'm installing as well. I'm gonna do 6.5's all around and just use adaptor plates in the front to fit them.

For right now the doors are all I'm going to Dynamat, I might do the cargo area and firewall and such later.

Thanks for the note on the door panels, I'll be sure to lay them down on some towels or something to keep them safe.

I probably would have done 6x9 components if Alpine made any, but oh well.

Speaker sizes...

I have an 05 T4R myself. The front door speakers were 6x9 w/ tweeters even though all records showed them as 6.5's. I just replaced my stock system as noted on this site. You can do a search for "speaker enclosures" to get to it. The pics will show you the doors with the skins off and links on how to removing other parts. I'm pretty happy with the sound myself....no Dynamat was needed since the sound was coming out the front....but your listening taste may be different than mine.

Ok all said and done. Its all Alpine stuff.

IVA-D310 Head Unit
SPR17LS Components in front
SPR-17LP Coax's in back
SBS-05DC center channel in dash under the HU
MRD-M605 amp driving the SWR-1242D sub and a MRA-D550 amp driving the speakers all built in a custom enclosure. CHA-S634 CD/MP3 6 disc Changer is mounted on the back of the enclosure and is hidden behind the rear seats.
