Tomorrow I will be starting my manifold replacement. I am doing both. I bought factory bolts, nuts, and gaskets. Any tips, tricks, and words of advise ? I already started coating everything with PB blaster. I plan on running the motor for a little bit to get everything hot before I start removing bolts. The vehicle is from NH so it has some pretty good rust on it.

Check to see if they are warped. Mine was an I didn't catch it. Had to do the damn thing over. Had to machine it down to fix it cause their warranty doesn't cover warping. And now it's leaking again.

So I just spent 40 minutes on the drivers side. After 2 cycles this morning of heating up, soaking, letting cool down. I broke 1 ratchet, 2 extensions......and I think my finger. I also did 2 cycles last night. Im almost done my 2nd can of PB Blaster. Im pretty sure the manifolds are happy right were they are.

I feel for you man. I had a similar problem with my old tacoma when I went to replace the ball joints. Rust and age are a *****.

You need to check the flange . They will probably not 100% flat . I used a grinder to make them almost perfect . I have installed mine about month ago and so far no codes and leaks . Get a ratchet with kinda bend handle it helps a lot to get to nuts . Also use lots of po blaster and heat if possible . It good to have someone to help . Some of bolts are really hard to get . I didn't remove engine mounts but some people did to make easier access .
Took me and my fiance's dad 6 hours to do the job .

How come they are leaking ? Did you check them before you installed ? I mean are the flange were flat ? I don't think they cracked already . They look solid compare to oem manifolds..

So it took you 12 hours to do, 2 ppl x 6 hours.

All the reason above is why i happily sat in the waiting room at my favorite muffler shop for 3.5 hours to have both sides done on my v8.

My pacesetters did not come with the gaskets FYI.

cost me almost $300 to have them installed and i supplied the parts.
My guy did remove the motor mount on the pass side IIRC

Good luck and i hope all your nuts break free!

At this point I am going to do one of two options. IF toyota decides to replace my frame I may have the dealer do the manifolds while the motor is out. Or trade it and I will sell all the manifold stuff on here. Right now I am leaning towards trading but I cant decide on what I want.

Well.
I'm not a mechanic .we had only hand basic tools a floor jack plus case of beer . I don't mind to spend 6 hours on my truck instead spending 750$ for a labor at local shop

i spent $1300 total for both new manifolds, new studs, new bolts, new gaskets and labor. i wouldnt trade in my truck because of that. Unless you want to have a reason to get a new truck. then this is perfect reason. LOL

im not a mechanic either, but i look at it like this. My truck being down and out of commision will cost me more than the few hundred i spend to pay someone to do it right the first time. Once and done. 6 hours bonding with my truck is my idea of fun. now 6 hours offroading is my idea of fun! I pick and choose my battles. Just like the v8 timing belt/water pump job, paid someone to do it for $275. done right the first time and its all good.

thats just my thinking, dont get me wrong i'm willing to wrench if i can afford the vehicle to be down. i'm currently in the process of swapping out the clutch in my convertible for the winter :P

My frame is completely rusted/rotted. I have been fighting with Toyota for 2 years about replacing it. Now it looks like I finally have a dealership that will do it. Only problem is they are in New Hampshire and I live in Florida. So Its going to cost me about $1000 to get the vehicle shipped up and back. I have about $700 into the manifolds so far and they are not even on yet. I will need to pay the dealer to install them when they swap the motor over to the new frame, probably $2-300. I need new headlights, they have been buffed to death and now need to be replaced. My steering rack is leaking and has been for some time so it doesnt make sense to have the old one reinstalled and then I have to fight with it later, so that probably another $3-400. So at this point I am looking ATLEAST another $2000. My 4Runner has 165,000 miles on it. I love it and I dont want to get ride of it. But timing belt is going to need to be done, Im sure ball joints and wheel bearings are in the future. And what if something else goes wrong. This is the best vehicle I have ever owned and like I said I love it. But when is it time to let it go ??? I dont really have $2000 to put into and then have a 2004 vehicle with 165,000 miles

wow if you put it like that.

why does the dealer in new hampshire need to do the frame?

I talked with 2 Dealers down here in Florida and they want nothing to do with it. So I called a dealership I used to do glass work for when i lived up north in NH. And if he is going to put the work in to get Toyota to OK replacing the frame then he wants to do the work. Which is only fair.
