2001 SR5 are door switches supposed to light up or not, is there a bulb there.

I have the same ride, if you are talking courtesy lights (lights on the door) they are non existent. There is a mod on the site here if that's what you are after ;)

However you have a switch by the main interior light (no clue what it's called-beside thy head) if you switch it to auto, it will engage that light when the doors are opened and closed..

Good luck

My rear cargo light won't turn on when in Door mode, when I open the rear hatch. Not looking forward to chasing that down.

On my 97, no lights on any doors except the drivers door, on the Auto word on the driver's window switch. The cargo area interior light doesn't always come on when "door" is selected, but that's because of a faulty hatch latch.

It's probably just a bad bulb, if you have a multimeter just test both sides of the festoon bulb socket. If you have power, it's the bulb. If not, pull the light assembly out and check the wiring.

It works when the switch is on "on"

The little knob itself can come loose and not contact well, just pull the light fixture to find out. My main interior light in the front is very picky, I have to jiggle the switch a little for it to work on the door setting. If not it's your rear hatch door switch.
