Double din non touchscreen or scion pioneer headunit

Anyone have experience with a double din non touchscreen like pioneer kenwood clarion etc? I want aux and maybe bluetooth but want something that is a direct fit for my 2004 without needing trim.

Also, anyone ever use the pioneer from 2011-2013ish scion with the Bluetooth? I'm wondering if buying one on eBay will be direct fit without brackets and how likely the Bluetooth would connect with a used one of those.

non touchscreen, the kenwood had one with the trim pieces

im a pioneer guy, you can get the one with a screen too. its nice to have a screen.

either way, once you get a new radio, if brought from crutchfield, you should get everything that is needed. now do you have the standard radio or the jbl radio system, they are different and will need the correct kit.

go aftermarket radio, you get way more features and now with bluetooth and usb and also hd radio.
 
An oem unit is the only way you can go if you don't want a fill in trim piece on either side.
OEM radios were made for that wide opening.
Aftermarket radios are standard DIN size.
 
Like wc11 said, if having trim pieces is a deal-killer then you need to go with some version of a Toyota oem unit. You may have already looked but the large radio upgrade thread has loads of pictures of what various aftermarket radios look like in our dashes.

How much are you into sound quality? Aftermarket head units are almost always better sounding than oem radios. Fortunately with our 4Runners, there are kits out there to make the install very easy and we don't have to deal with all that integration stuff that many cars have.

what aux cords do people buy to run the female out to in front of dash somewhere for the scion pioneer with aux on the back of unit only? i might end up buying
one of the bluetooth version scion pioneers from 2012-2013ish...i just want to confirm its plug and play and what type of aux to route...unless that one has front aux-in or w.e. heres the scion i could buy on ebay.

the scion units are plug & play for non jbl 4runners... theres a big long thread on here of people using all kinds of scion units & they all get positive reviews. supposed to sound much better than teh stock 4runner radios.
 
Corolla

I went with a 2012-2013 Corolla head unit because I thought it looked "modern enough" without being overbearing. Seemed to fit better with the period of the car but added things like HD radio, XM, Navigation, BT music streaming, AUX, BT calling, USB charger etc. My 2006 already had the AUX input, but i added a USB outlet inside my console (it charges the phone and allows for entune internet function on the radio (traffic, weather, etc)).

Its a direct plug and play (with a few harnesses). No dash cutting required fit perfect!

I went and put the XM antenna in the spoiler, but i ended up taking it out because I had to many interference issues, so now im going to put a corolla XM antenna on the roof in the future.

Here it is (attached)! If you need some daylight photos let me know.

Other pros, it lights up orange, and it starts with TOYOTA logo (not scion).

Oh yeah its touchscreen if that matters to you.

it just better to shop at crutchfield, once you select the radio you want, youll also get the included trim pieces and harnesses that is needed, also you will loose steering wheel control if you dont get the integration. get idatalink maestro for steering wheel control integration.
 
thanks^ i noticed crutchfield is highly reviewed, positively. i wouldnt be opposed to going that route but im just so addicted to amazon lol. those kits they put together with the radio, harness and trim for $100 for pioneer are compelling...i am going to possibly still go the route of the scion radio with bluetooth from ebay. i noticed JEGS.com has these scion headunits factory refurbished 'new' condition for sale for $140-$200.

can someone tell me what type of aux cable i need to hook up to the back of Scion units, and route in front of dasdh for aux? also, aside from that aux cable, everything else is plug and play for scions headunits? some people mentioned a 'few' harnesses are needed....i can only think of the aux though from the back - i have no steering wheel controls and non jbl once again.

Not sure if your using a iOS or Android Phone

but the scion HU doesnt support android control using a UBS cord. Only BT which uses more battery. The kenwood HU linked supports control of an android phone (apps) using a USB cord and charges the phone at the same time. Serious win -win if your a android user.

So id have to turn on the phone to change stations and songs? But volume works from the scion units? Thanks for the info on the kenwood.
 
I've Pioneer nex 4200 with apple carplay / android in my 4Runner. I like the sound output, but hate hate hate the touch screen or any touch screen in car.
Its too distracting you can't change the songs without losing attention. The best one's are that have big buttons to flip in between songs collection and a dial knob to control volume output. For the sake of simplicity and distraction free user experience those are best.

Note: I did not install it myself, but inherited with the car that I purchased pre-owned. The way it sounds and navigation and everything is top class.

[MENTION=353729]pixologics[/MENTION] yeah, i agree. i dont like touchscreens in vehicles for the reasons you mentioned, reliability of sensors and touchscreens, and the fact that i dont watch a lot of video in my car. the unit you have seems like a neat option with the buttons.

i know i have been all over the place but i am liking the idea of a single din at this point. was looking on crutchfield and see this factory refurbish marine grade water resistant JVC...with how often im surfing and wheeling, active, i might run this setup.

Yep, for my 2006 (non jbl) all my steering wheel controls work with no changes or other adapters needed. I'd have to add the right hand controls for the phone, but again its direct OEM plug and play and they would work (but its 100$ for that dang right side). Also the phone and all works fine with BT but i have to push the phone button on the dash instead of the steering wheel (because they dont exist...yet). My understanding was before 2006 some of the wires may not have been pre run like in 2006+'s so YMMV (like the aux wire for example).

Yes it supports a backup camera (single plug 6volt to the camera). I did not install one because i'm lazy but its a direct plug in also. the only thing required that would require "cutting" would be 12 volt backup wire input from the fuse box to signal to the headunit to turn on the camera.

When I say you need a few harnesses (for my 06 anyways):
I needed the following:


  • Head Unit
  • 28 to 20 pin harness (toyota part)
  • Antenna harness (toyota part / scion)
  • 2 to 1 Y adapter for the dual antennas in our trucks (metra)
  • 1 of the antenna plugs is a different size so you need an adapter (metra)
  • Microphone harness (scion)
  • Nav unit - Called an "Extension box" (if you want it, and if you do its another harness (toyota part))
  • I modified my original brackets to attach the nav box, but if your not adding nav the brackets are the same. Long story short you dont need to buy brackets if your half handy with a hammer and drill bit and have basic measuring skills.
  • USB plug for the console, and USB adapter plug for the radio
  • GPS antenna if you add the extension box
  • XM plug for back of radio if you want the XM, and XM antenna (i currently have the magnet one, but i'm going to add a corolla one later)

It seems like a long list of parts, but its honestly about 20 minutes to install because its literally all plug ins. The longest part for me was fishing the XM wire in the car and modifying my brackets so I didn't have to buy them.

If you want a real "parts list" I used with the part numbers let me know (im at work so its not handy) and i'll put it up.

Turns out I had it on a drive!

A lot of options depending what you want to do. If you want hands free microphone, navigation, USB input/charging, backup camera. If you just want the double din to turn on and play AM/FM/CD's its really easy. Just need the radio, 28 to 20 pin, and antenna wires. That can be done for $200 bucks probably. The original poster would need the aux wires (sorry don't have the part number but he can sleuth the dealers parts and find it I'm sure).

If you want to add navigation and all the bells and whistles like I did, make sure you find a head-unit that already has the extension box and extension box harness. The sellers like to separate them and nickel and dime people. Shop around I did the entire thing for about $400.

Attached is the part numbers and about 5 minute searching up the costs again. SHOP AROUND!
