thanks. I already knew this. what I was trying to explain to this guy buying a truck is that the highway and city milage on the sticker price list is a complete lie! we're all facing the low end of the milage range. is this acceptable?

I don't understand why this debate comes up. The V6 and V8 are both excellent engines. They are both pretty close in performance, where the V8 has a higher tow rate. They both are very close in their gas mileage (less then 2mpg), and yes the 05 V8 can get 20mpg, I have. If you are not towing over 5K pounds there is no need for the V8, period!

I think the standard WD hitch on the V8 is worth having even if you are towing 3500 pounds. If you have a boat and plan on hauling it out of the water with the truck the V8 is worth considering also since the higher torque on the V8 is useful for this specific kind of situation.

Those of you with 4WD models are facing the low end of the mileage range, and with good reason. On the highway, the vehicles are reaching the stated highway EPA figures. In town, they are capable of dropping right down to the bottom end of the EPA figures. If it's not acceptable to you, then you should have bought a Prius or an Insight, or some other hybrid.

If the V8 will only cost you $200 more in total it is an absolute no brainer, get it you wont be sorry.

V8 = more power and less mileage (both depends on how you drive)


To onerunner: You are pretty abusive for a noob and I suggest you relook your posts. With that attitude you will not be welcomed my members here for too long. And just an FYI, with my old V8, more than 3" of lift, 32" A/T tires and being a fast driver I average between 16 and 17 MPG calculated always, this includes some, highway and wheeling. I do run synthetic oil in everything apart from the transmission. I also noted that cleaning the MAF and replacing the air filter regularly helps a lot. Also driving terrain and maintaining momentum in a heavy vehicle makes a huge difference.

I've owned two 4rth gen V8 Ltd 4Runners.....each has been able to repeatedly attain the window sticker quoted mileages for city and highway, often under much more demanding circumstances (3 people, hot day, A/C on, etc) than the mileage is rated for.

Does it get 20mpg ALL the time, of course not! Clearly if I go up a steep hill and floor it with the A/C on, it's not getting 20mpg at that exact moment, or in stop in go traffic, or whatever, but on average on a long trip (8 hours) I will get 20mpg....the computer may even read a bit better.

Is 20mpg "good" in the grand scheme of things? Not really. Is it good for a heavy, powerful, off-road capable vehicle in full-time 4wd with a V8 (or V6) pushing big tires? I sure think it is.

Umm...

I never called anybody HERE an idiot. I simply said don't "be an idiot" as in.... There are a lot of idiot drivers on the roads that ride the brakes constantly. They're just taking all the fuel that they just turned into momentum and changing it right back into heat by riding the brakes; being extremely wasteful.

As I said, I wasn't calling anybody here an idiot; I was just making a general statement about 'idiot drivers' that ride the brakes and don't look ahead and plan their speed accordingly.

Yesterday, I drove the SE V6, then the LIM V8. The V6 sounded louder and throatier, and had a throttle soft-spot at about 55-60, vice the V8, which was quiet, smooth and creamy to whatever speed I wanted (don't know if the LIM has more soundproofing).

I'm getting a V8, though, because, if I don't, I'll just wish I had every time I see one for the next 10 or 15 years. And no amount of money (initial price or gas price difference) is worth the angst.

Life's going by too quick.
