Drive shaft grease?

Does anyone know what type grease to use in the drive-shaft U-joints, etc of my 2010 SR5 4Runner and how many Zerk fittings there are? I can't seem to find the answers and if I find something it's is on the previous generation runners. I have searched the 5th. gen. forum but can't seem to find it there either.
I have 17,000 miles on the truck now and I would like to grease it.

Try the Owners Manual - page 620 in my 2010 edition. All grease fittings are on the drive line and the number is dictated by 2WD or 4WD.
 
bumping this thread.

anyone know how many zerk fittings i should be looking for on prop shaft and u joints?

Actually Toyota specifies two different greases for the different zerks. Now, when you get a quick lube at the stealer, do I think the little monkey has two different guns down there? No, I bet they use the same grease in all fittings. I follow Toyota's recommendation. One is moly based and one is not, although I can't recall which goes where without looking. There was a thread on this topic before that identified it correctly.

My read is that three different non-zerk-specific greases are acceptable.

Yes, I'm also interested to know how many zerk fittings there are and exactly which types of grease are to be used since I'm also pretty sure (as another poster pointed out) that Toyota calls for two different types of grease.

Perhaps it's time for someone to tackle a how-to on driveshaft lubrication. :)
 
Also found this in the repair manual General / Chassis / Maintenance

10. LUBRICATE PROPELLER SHAFT AND TIGHTEN BOLTS

(a) Lubricate the propeller shaft by referring to the lubrication chart. Before pumping in grease, wipe off any mud and dust on the grease fitting.

(b) Grease grade

SPIDER LITHIUM BASE CHASSIS GREASE NLGI NO. 2
Slide yoke and double Cardan joint Molybdenum disulphide lithium base chassis grease NLGI No. 2

(c) Tighten the bolts of the propeller shaft.


Still looking for the Lubrication chart that is mentioned.

I looked on page 620 as you suggested which lists type of grease to use, no mention of number of fittings however. I have a 2WD and I can only find a total of 2, one on each side of the driveshaft. Can someone confirm that there are only 2? Thanks.

Can't confirm "only 2".

  • Driveshaft (propeller shaft) has ZERO (not 2 like you mention)
  • Spiders (u-joints) one each for a total of TWO
  • Slide Yoke (universal joint sleeve yoke) has ONE
I find a total of THREE

That PDF page is 2WD model. 4WD has one more zerk on main shaft and front shaft that is Slide Yoke which calls for Molybdenum aka Moly type grease. Clear as mud?

In summary: Spiders (X-shaped joints) ------- No2 Lithium Base Grease
Slide Yoke ------------------------ Molybdenum Base Grease

Recomending same type by dealer is most likely due to supply and storage simplification.

Thanks for the info. I used wrong terminology when saying one on each end of driveshaft. You’re right it’s one on each of the Spiders however; I do not see the grease fitting on the Slide Yoke. I looked twice. I guess I'll look again.
 
There are definitely only 2 grease fittings on my 2013 2WD SR5. One on each of the Spiders. First photo is the front.
