Droning sound...hearing impaired 4Runner owner

Hello fellas,

First off please note I am hearing impaired. At first I thought it was my hearing processor that was causing the interference but after few seconds I realize the sound is coming from the 4Runner itself. I recorded a video to show it to my friend and he confirmed there is a loud droning sound. My key was set at "ACC" at the time of recording this video - this droning sound also occurs when the vehicle is turned on.


I've never heard of this droning sound before until after I picked up my 4Runner from the shop. However I am not sure if the droning sound is related to the work that was done or it is coming from my headunit itself. I asked them to look into this sound when I came back and they could not duplicate the issue.

When I lean in closer toward the head unit, the droning sound decreases in volume indicating it is not coming from the head unit itself. However once I lean backwards and raise my neck level slightly higher toward the roof, the droning sound gets louder.

I also noticed another similar sound when braking to a complete stop at lights. However it's rather static sounding and goes away once the 4Runner is on the move.


Work that was conducted at said dealership

• Front and rear sway bar links replaced
• Front CV boot kit replaced (was leaking according to the dealership)

Nav head unit

• The bluetooth phone still works but I cannot play music from my phone nor access anything on the unit. It is essentially frozen as you see in the video. I accidentally messed around with camera settings and I guess it kept the changes I accidentally made. I'm not sure if this is connected to the droning sound - a friend of mine said that sounds similar to his when he has his AUX plugged in except I don't have anything to plug in nor currently use the AUX outlet inside the center console in my Sport '07

Just in case someone suggests it, it is not the volume from the headunit itself

I also recorded dash cam footage of the static sound that occurred earlier during a drive. I am going to go through footage and hope the audio is clear enough for you guys to hear. I'll report back later tonight with an update on footage recording the static sound not heard in the youtube link above

What components do you have installed associated with the headunit? Perhaps an amp or something is failing and/or on the fritz? That (at least from the video) sounds like a very electric noise, like an amp or something humming vs. say a brake booster failing or motor acting up.
