2005 4runner 4.0 Sport. 265K. I have to replace the rear brake lines - I've already done a thread on that and had a strategy. However, now I notice that one of the gas tank straps is rotted and broken. If im going to take the skid plate off and replace the straps ( I saw the thread on this), can i drop the tank some to completely remove the old brake lines?

You can drop the tank but I did not on mine. I removed all the tubing I could and used nickel copper line in a roll to make all my lines myself. Super easy to bend and work with. Once I removed as much as I could of the old line I threaded the new line up over the tank. Not long after that my rear tank strap broke, I may have dropped the tank a bit if I new the strap was going to fail but I wouldn't want to drop it too far as there's a good amount of items to disconnect. BTW, on mine the frame bolt for that rear strap ripped out of the frame leaving a nice rust hole when I tried removing it. The pin on the inside is also fun to free up. The front strap was easier but the bolt still broke so I needed to fish a new one into the frame.

Yeah the rust on these make it a super fun task, lol! I did my straps in the past year, and had similar challenges, only I was able to get the bolts out and replaced, with retapped holes. I do plan to use a Safety-Cap frame section on that side next year, which will require dropping the tank, but it’s still in much better shape than the same area on the passenger side. I will be welding a replacement frame section on that side very soon. Hopefully someone will chime in about dropping the whole tank, because I WILL be doing that at some point!
