DSLR Cameras?

I'm looking to dive into the realm of DSLR cameras, and was originally looking at the Canon Rebel XTi. However, I am now conxidering the Sony DSLR-A700, which is in the same price category as the Canon 40D. Can you recommend anything for me, or point me in the right direction? Any advice would be appreciated. This will be my first DSLR, but I would like it to last for a while. When I looked at the XTi I was unimpressed with the plastic body.

my opinion is that Nikon D series is a serious and affordable camera which has capabilities for still/motion photography. I own a D70 and have been surprised with the accolades other members here have shared. In the attached pic (actual light) it requires three distinct distances. all are clear from the birds in the foreground to the Bridge to the letters on the Ship. just my opinion but I think Nikon optics are superior.

I would go with either Nikon or Cannon. Both companies have vast array of bodies, lenses, accesories and imaging software.
Although we all know Sony produces top quality electronics, photography is not a very large part of thier product line.

Between Nikon and Cannon, I'd go with Nikon. I am a professional photographer and have used Nikon gear for almost 20 years........ so, yes, I am biased, I admit, but I have never had any reason to switch to Cannon.

Nikons are engineered and built very well, and are extremely dependable (just like a Toyota!). I have photographed over 800 weddings in my career and on a typical Saturday night, I'll shoot 2000 to 3000 images. I've had one Nikon body fail one time in all those weddings (we had backup of course). I've never had a Nikon lens or flash fail. Also, my Nikon bodies are made with alot of metal and rubber "O" rings to seal out dust and moisture. In this respect I don't think Cannons are built as well when it comes to being rugged and durable against the elements.

Nikon has 24/7 live tech support by phone. I've never been put on hold for more that 5 minutes before I got a person on the line.

Really, you can't go wrong with either brand. It's all personal preference.

Both companies will allow you to continually upgrade and add to your collection.

I have the Canon 30D and I love it. The build quality is great and there are many modes to fit the rookies and pros. I really can't find any negative things to say about that camera! Overall, the quality of the pictures all depends on the lenses that you use. That is probably one of the most important things when considering any SLR camera. If you want to see some samples from the 30D, let me know and I can send you some full size pictures.
