DSLR Storage / Mounting in cabin

Has anyone found any good solutions for mounting or securing their DSLRs while off-road yet allows for quick access if you want to jump out and take pictures?

I’d love to have it secured somewhere around the dash that I could quickly unclip and hop out if needed yet stayed secure while I’m bouncing down the trails. Throwing it on the passenger side seat makes me nervous at times.

I bought my DSLR for the summit last year and pretty much know nothing about the kind of equipment out there.

Mine fits perfectly in the center console. I have some tupperware in there at the bottom for organization and once I put my camera in the lens lays nicely on the little black divider. That way I know its protected from the elements (especially if I have my windows down) and it can't go flying or sliding in case of any large bumps.

I keep mine in a Lowepro backpack on the back seat, or the Mrs hangs on to it in the front passenger.

Nothing fancy but it works.. are you just thinking storage? or do you want a mount for POV video as you'e driving?

I have a Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Home (seriously, that's the name of the bag). It's a padded shoulder bag with a velcro flap opening so I hang the strap around the passenger seat headrest so it hangs off the back of the seat. The velcro flap is easy to open/close so it's secure from falling out but accessible. The bag is also big enough to hold a second lens and some other accessories like filters, lens cleaner, spare battery, etc.

I know [MENTION=63060]rickashay[/MENTION] had a nice setup with a ThinkTank holster where he ran the strap through both the driver and passenger headrests so it hung in between the two seats. I would've gone with that setup too but my dog likes to move between the passenger seat and rear seats while we're wheeling.

I taped bubble wrap around the center console's walls (the big bubble kind) and threw it in there.

Which cameras/lenses are you guys putting in your center consoles? I'm pretty sure there's no way my D600 and 24-120mm with the lens hood on would fit. I keep so much other stuff in the console anyhow - lighters, waterproof matches, knives, sunglasses, etc.

For most of if not all of my posted shots I bought a $20 case for my iPhone and I keep it padded between my hind end and the seat cushion.

I did recently get a DSLR for my wife and I was thinking about combining a RAM mount (http://www.rammount.com/Products/CameraMounts/LargeCameraMountKits/tabid/4701/Default.aspx) and a tripod quick release. We got her a Vangaurd tripod that has a pistol grip and a quick release (http://www.adorama.com/VGGH200.html...g Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=dealtime). I figure that if you could use a quick release mechanism like what they use on the tripod and could elevate it with the RAM mount, you could keep it safe and free it up with one motion.

The problem is that this set up would stack up to be cumbersome. I would maybe just go with the RAM mount, you would need to open and sinch down the neck whenever you pulled it out or put it back. We have just been using the factory camera bag for now. I haven't really come up with a clean way to make it happen yet but I'll keep working on it and let you know if I come up with something.

I may have been trying to over-think over-engineer this...the camera bag around the back of the passenger side headrest is a simple solution.

I'm not trying to take any dash mounted video or anything like that...I was just trying to think of a way to incorporate a tripod quick release somewhere handy where I could clip in the camera when I wasn't using it and then unclip and hop out of the truck when needed.

I use a "holster-style" bag with the strap around the passenger seat headrest. Works fine for me.

Holster bag is a good way to go. I use one from this company:

I forget which model I have, but the back of the bag has D-rings on the top and bottom. In addition to using the strap over the headrest, I like to use small bungees with the bottom D-rings so the bag doesn't swing around while offroad.

I've used Domke bags well in the past in different vehicles. Canvas bags with great padding and support. You can leave the flap open on the floor for easy access. Also they don't look like camera bags so much less theft risk while in sketchy areas.

I have a few DSLRs and lenses, most commonly used is Canon 5D Mark II w/17-40mm and 24-105mm. Throwing it in the centre console works the best for me. I can't do this with my 70-200mm mounted though.

I was think using this quick release to mount the camera on the dash or somewhere.

Ya, unfortunately nothin fancy here either. The lady will hold it (the camera….) if she's riding shotty, otherwise my photo stuff rides in its a photo back pack on the seat next to me or in the back seat for easy access.

yea I mostly just use my iPhone when we are out. I did just get my wife a Nikon D3100 for her birthday, so chances are I'll bring that next time I'm out. and after this thread, I'll know where to store it
