DSLR Storage / Mounting in cabin

I don't like keeping my good camera equipment in the car unless I am actually out shooting. However, I do keep an old Nikon D50 with an extra lens in a small Lowepro bag. It fits right into the space on the right side of the cargo area. I keep a tripod plate attached, and a small Induro tripod in my box of tricks. I also keep a Canon A570 in the center console (runs on AA's replace batteries anytime!) Aaaaand, I keep a Sealine waterproof iPhone case in there as well. When I move up to full frame, I'll swap out the D50 for the D300...

I also HATE bags that scream camera (every camera bag does no matter how incognito it claims to be.) I bought a Sealine weatherproof messenger bag, and a Domke insert fits right into it. I can keep all of my essential gear in it, and it looks like a messenger bag (because it is) and it is also protected from the elements.

But I've used cheapo non brand name bags and they all jus fall apart. When you switch to a pro quality - not size related - they hold up so much better and have better foam. The last thing you want to do is be walking and have a bag give out or zipper break open. Maybe I'm ridiculous about quality but I've learned my lesson about cheap stuff the hard way a few times. Why I'm driving a toyota and not a jeep...

My smaller carry bag is a lowepro toploader aw 75.

I agree with you 100% on buying cheap but I need something I can get into quickly and my Pelican hard cases that are my primary storage do not allow that quick access. The backpack I mentioned earlier while cheap can carry some of my larger lenses already mounted with no problem unlike the smaller bags. Though I do like the sling bag.
