DSP Added to Audio System

Since buying my 2013 SR5 new three years ago, I’ve been craving for better sound. It came with the basic, 8-speaker, non-JBL, non-nav audio system. Within a couple of months or so after buying it, I changed all the factory speakers, which made a terrific improvement. I kept the system in party mode constantly, and adjusted the treble and bass. The result wasn’t too bad, but I wanted better, and I didn’t want to go through everything that’s involved in changing the head unit (new SiriusXM add-on, Sirius antenna adapter, steering wheel control adapter, USB adapter, etc), so I decided to go with a digital signal processor (DSP) and a small amp, and keep the stock head unit.

I wanted the amp and DSP to fit under the driver’s seat, so I needed items that were small enough to fit there, yet provide quality sound. After much research, I chose the AudioControl DQ-61 for the DSP because of its small footprint, great reviews, and capability of manual tuning (I don’t own a laptop to adjust the EQ settings). For the amp, I chose an Alpine MRV-F300 because it also has a reputation for providing clean sound, has a small footprint, and enough power for my needs.
I measured the usable space under the driver’s seat, and it came to about 13½” x 9½”. I knew the height under the seat would be tight and that the heat vent under the seat shouldn’t be blocked. So, I traced the DSP and amp on pieces of cardboard to see how best to configure them to fit under the seat. Then, I got a 2’x2’ piece of ¼” MDF at Home Depot and cut it to the size of the maximum available space. After determining the best orientation of the equipment using the cardboard pieces, I placed them on the MDF and they fit, but barely.

I painted the MDF black so it wouldn’t be so noticeable, then mounted the two pieces of electronics on the MDF with screws. The heat vent under the seat sits ½” above the rest of the carpet, so I used longer screws on the back and left side of the MDF. This lifts the MDF and keeps it from sitting directly on the carpet and blocking the heat vent.

Taking a cue from Axxman’s audio post, I wanted to be able to connect everything without cutting or splicing into any of the vehicle’s wiring, and be able to disconnect everything when I eventually trade vehicles or make another mod to the audio system. So, I bought a radio wiring harness (Metra 70-1761) and a reverse radio harness (Scosche). I found out later that Metra also makes a reverse harness (71-1761), but I had already bought the Scosche. Since there would be 8 wires going from the head unit’s speaker outputs to the DQ-61, and 8 more going back to the speaker plug behind the head unit, I bought a 20 ft section of Stinger 9-conductor cable, cut it in half, and had plenty for the task.

After crimping all the wires in the two pieces of 9-conductor cable to the two wiring harnesses, I taped them together to keep them out of the way of whatever is already in the vehicle. I ran the cables down the front of the dash and through the console, exiting from the rear bottom of the console to under the driver’s seat. (See Antman’s thread on how to remove the top part of the console and how to run the power cable from the battery to the front seat.) There is no need to remove either the main shift knob or the 4WD knob when removing the console.

To ground both the amp and DSP, I drilled a hole through the piece of metal cross-bracing that the front of the seat bolts to. The seat bolts were too big to go through the terminals on the ground wires. Otherwise, I would have used one of the seat bolts, per Antman. For the power to the DSP, I used an add-a-tap in an unused slot in the fuse block under the dash. For reference, the 4Runner uses fuse type ATM-LP. LP stands for low-profile, but the add-a-tap doesn’t use low-profile fuses, so you’ll need to get “regular” ATM fuses for that.

Next, it was just a matter of hooking up the speaker wiring from the radio to the DSP, and hooking up the return wiring from the amp back to the speaker plugs.

The result: fantastic sound. A couple of tweaks to the EQ settings on the DSP were needed, but just a shot-in-the-dark tuning made an amazing difference. All four of the rear speakers are still functional. Party mode still works, but there is no real reason to use party mode anymore. One downside to the mod: if you want to adjust the EQ on the DSP, you need to remove the four bolts holding the driver’s seat, and tilt the seat back to have access to the EQ buttons. The upside is, once the EQ is set, there is no reason to ever monkey with the adjustments again. I got the adjustments pretty well perfect by downloading a pink noise track from the net and used the AudioContol RTA app on my iPad to read the result.

As an aside, I found that both the Metra and Scosche harnesses have only four terminals for the rear speaker harness. The plug going into the back of the OEM radio has five terminals. I wasn’t able to identify what the fifth wire went to. It’s a white wire about twice the diameter of a hair. I decided to go ahead with the assembly and see what didn’t work after the install. Turns out, the small white wire controls the nighttime illumination of the radio face. The daytime illumination (headlights off) was fine; it was only when the headlights were on that there was no illumination on the radio at all. So, I removed the head unit again, swapped an unused terminal from one of the plugs to the Metra and Scosche harness plugs, and connected those terminals together. All is now good. I’m wondering, though, if that small white wire can somehow be tweaked to provide brighter (like daytime) illumination to the head unit when the headlights are on. Maybe a more adventurous and knowledgeable modder can take that on.

Thank you for posting this. I am going back and forth on DSPs right now and this unit comes recommended by my local shop who would do the install. Are you able to still use the factory volume control without messing with the eq settings?

Your approach to several inherent O.E.M. audio system obstacles e.g., equipment location, 'adding a high performance DSP to your stock HU', How to avoid cutting your factory speaker wiring when upgrading the stock drivers...etc, have been addressed and eradicated!

And I'm lovin' your upgraded audio system equipment selections, even your use of the Metra-cable 'reverse (pin-out) harness' (71-1761) to avoid butchering your 4Runner's factory audio system wiring for future o.e.m. restoration, I think reveals an individual who is more than capable of tremendous insight... and proves to solve problems 'BEFORE' they arise! Thank you for your detailed writing descriptions and 'Step-by-step' photo support. Thank you for posting this. I am going back and forth on DSPs right now and this unit comes recommended by my local shop who would do the install. Are you able to still use the factory volume control without messing with the eq settings?

The controls on the head unit aren't affected. You can still use volume, fade, bass, balance, everything. Honestly, though, you probably won't need to use the bass and treble controls after setting the EQ on the DSP.

This was your very first write-up... this makes your efforts even more remarkable than my first impression! When a paper gives too much detail (IMHO) it's usually not because the subject itself is just saturated with far too much fascinating insight and bursting with the surprises of a brilliant "Who-Done-it" mystery novel.

It's usually because the writer allows exhaustive repetition, "far too much verbosity, and not nearly enough informative, vital content! But that's not you... you've got plenty of 'your own' very stimulating ideas to share, "...I hope to be hearing a lot more from you"! Sincerely,

Since the alpine is a 4 channel amp, which speakers did you choose to amplify? Front and hatch or front and rear doors?

All the speakers are amplified. The amp feeds back into the OE speaker cables. As a result, all speakers get fed the amplified signal.

The factory head unit is 4 channel as well and I'm pretty sure it's wired in series. The front goes to the 3.5" dash speakers & the 6x9's in the front doors, and the rear is the 6.5's in the rear doors and tailgate. If you upgrade them all you might as well stick with stock wiring. I just replaced the front and rear door speakers with 3-way coaxials and ran them directly to the amp, so I removed the dash and tailgate speakers.

Not that it makes a difference, but the dash and front door speakers are wired together in parallel; the rear door and tailgate speakers are wired together in series.

Do you mind explaining a little more in depth of how the wiring is setup beyond the harnesses being plug and play?

It rests on the bolts. It can't go anywhere - the seat rails prevent it from going side to side, the ridge on the floor at the front of the seat prevents it from going forward, and the rear WeatherTech prevents it from going rearward.

You'll need an amp wiring kit for the amp. I used this one. Installing it is pretty straightforward. For more in-depth wiring of that, see [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]'s thread.

Power for the DSP comes from tapping into the fuse box under the driver's side dashboard. I used an empty slot in the fusebox, but don't recall which one. It powers on when the ignition is on and off when the key is turned off. The DSP pulls very little power - something like 7 amps. The DSP is automatically triggered to come on when it detects speaker volume; therefore, it comes on when you turn on the radio. You don't have to run a separate trigger wire for it. A great feature of the AudioControl unit is that it has a trigger to turn on the amp. So, just run a short wire from the trigger output connection of the DSP to the trigger input connection on the amp, and everything will come on automatically when the radio is turned on.

For the speakers, use a 9-conductor cable, like this one. You'll only use 8 of the conductors, but it keeps everything neat. Cut the cable in half. One end of one half of the 9-conductor cable gets connected to the output harness that plugs into the back of the radio; the other end is connected to the DSP speaker inputs. One end of the other half of the 9-conductor cable is connected to the input harness that plugs into the existing harness that was originally plugged into the radio. The other end goes to the speaker outputs of the amp. I used crimp connectors. Others would suggest soldering the connections.

You'll use short RCA cables to connect the DSP and the amp.

If all this sounds complicated, it's really not. I'm anything but an audio expert, but I do like good sound. If I could figure this out, most anyone can. Watch a few YouTube videos, read a few articles on the DIYMA forum, as well as the manuals that came with the amp and DSP, and you won't have any problems. The most difficult step for me was removing a pin from the harness to make the radio lighting work when the headlights were on (see my original post).
 
You are the man! That helped a lot! I'm in the same boat as you, I want better sound, but I want to keep everything with a stock appearance.

Agreed! Plus I like the idea that the dash will look 100% stock.

Nah I ended up doling a pioneer 8200nex instead. Decided to run focal components and anything but a new head unit was a compromise.

Good deal. I'm going to make one of these for my Ham radio that I have just sitting on the floor under my driver's seat and may add a CB as well.

I have a JBL system with the factory nav, with 5 disc in-dash CD changer and built-in bluetooth. I also wanted to upgrade my system (new amp, new sub woofer and new speakers) but keep my factory head unit (Nav, Bluetooth, CD-changer, steering wheel controls, factory look... why change it?).

I wanted to let others know that if you have a JBL system and are inspired by this post, AudioControl makes a DSP unit that you can use to similar effect.

My install was not nearly as clean... I had to cut, splice and solder (with heat shrink to cover each wire) the high-level outputs where they come *out* of the factory amp wiring harness in the rear passenger side by the sub enclosure.

I also used 9 conductor wiring to run the speaker level, amplified signal into an AudioControl Unit for clean up and conversion to a line-level output.

and then RCA cables from the audio control unit to an after market amp which I mounted under the passenger side seat (5 channel, 1000 watt rockford fosgate amp... first bought for $599, but found 1 week later on clearance for $279... luckily BEFORE my install. Can you say "return to sender for refund!")

I also ran all new speaker wires directly to new speakers and a new sub driver mounted in the factory sub enclosure (I wanted thicker wires to better handle the high power output) so my job was a much more intrusive install, and not nearly as as clean as yours, Auntie Soshul.


But I wanted to let people know that it is a vialbe option, it works flawlessly with my head unit and JBL system, and it sounds FANTASTIC.

Awesome write up, @AuntieSoshul. Great research and really nice implementation. I will definitely copy your idea of using a painted MDF board with bolts as "feet".
