dumb but simple question

What is the black piece on the back of 4runners? the oe above the window. seems like they all have tem but I am unsure name or purpose

It is an air spoiler.

It redirects air downward into the low pressure area created by the shape of the rear of the vehicle when you are moving. This reduces drag a bit and keeps the window clean.

It's also supposed to help keep exhaust gases out of the car with the rear window down.

They're on most but not all runners.
