Duratrac compatibility question!

I've been reading tons of threads the last week or two about tires and in particular Duratracs but cannot find an answer to my particular question! I have used the search tool extensively! Many threads point to tirerack as a good source of information but I noticed that both Tirerack and Goodyears website do not list the Duratrac as compatible with the 5th gen 4 runner.

So stock are 265/70/17 and there are duratracs available in that same size at C or E load ratings! Is the reason they are not listed because the OEM tires are P rated? Is this one of those legal situations where toyota won't endorse AT tires on their on/off road vehicles in case someone puts it in a ditch so to be on the safe side they endorse only street tires?

I was kind of surprised that tirerack didn't show them as a match! As far as third party resellers go you'd think, "if the shoe fits" sell it..

Anyway, I'm just curious - I've already pretty much decided to go with stock size Duratracs and plan to get them installed before winter is here!

Doesn't appear to be the case. There are other Light Truck tires listed, some of them Q speed rated, so it must be something else.
 
I think it might be some software glitch on tirerack. It was listed as compatible few weeks ago. And it's listed on canadiantire.ca and some other sites I checked. Anyway, I'm going for oil change on first week of September and I'll ask dealer about their price for Duratracs and if price is good I'll get the tires. I don't think there are going to be any issues.
 
Freaky. If you search by vehicle, the Duratracs don't show up. If you search by size, they're the first ones up. Tire Rack has problems.

Tirerack's glitchy software is probably to blame.I always just search by brand or size. Then again,P-rated tires probably are the best for 4Runners if your not going offroad,especially for gas mileage.

Kind of off topic .....Discount Tire also known as America's Tire in some places has a Labor Day sale tomorrow and Sat giving a $100 pre paid Visa card rebate with the purchase of 4 tires OR 4 wheels. Thanks for the feedback everyone! That makes sense! Though the good year site also didn't match the Duratrac which I thought was also odd! It actually has a X icon and states, "this tire does not fit your vehicle"

I definitely will be going off road and hopefully lots of it! There will also be plenty of snow in my 4 runners future so the all round great reviews the Duratrac gets makes it a winner for me. Since I got my new 4 runner a couple of months ago I've taken it up around Big bear a few times and I can't get enough of it! All my life I've been all about motorcycles but I've had such a blast since discovering off-roading in a 4x4. Getting the TE was definitely the right decision for me - If motorcycles thought me one thing - it's that the most important change from stock you'll ever do to a vehicle is getting the right tires.

Anyway - I was thinking I'd go with the (E) rated tires - there's lots of sharp rocks and boulders in the mountain/desert terrain I frequent! E seems like the way to go!

I've got almost 35k on my E-rated Duratracs. I'll take a picture tomorrow of the tread depth and wear on them, @ 44 psi, that has occurred. For the record, I highly recommend them even if Goodyear won't.

Awesome, thanks Mike! That's much better than the 3k miles @ $200+ per tire my bikes have given me over the years!

This was one of the reasons I went with Duratracs. I'll be doing some mountain driving in the snow at least a few times per year. They also handle great in the rain.

Same logic I used. They've been great thus far on rocks and soft sand.

Again, I run them @ 44psi and they have 34,837 miles on them. Very happy with how they have worn so far and I still get 17 mpg in the city if I drive sanely with no A/C.
 
I just put stock size and E's on my new trail edition. I had the same tires E's in 265 75 16 on my built Tacoma for 20,000 they still looked almost new, get the E's.

im guessing most people would say they are probably worth the extra weight to be that much more durable, correct?

i actually went C on my third gen, beat the crap out of them good on rocks and what not and they hold up fine :)

Unsprung weight is obviously a huge factor in performance and economy! In reading various treads and feedback regarding the duratracs - It seems the folks who suffer the greatest MPG hit are the ones with lifts and oversized tires! The impact of the weight difference between stock size E tires compared to stock C rated seemed minimal - so I figured why not.

I would love to see concrete figures - but with so many variations of mods on the trucks in addition to tires we don't have many, "control" vehicles to derive reliable numbers from.

Not only unsprung weight but lifting a vehicle punches a bigger "hole" in the air at highway speeds and affects aerodynamics - yes, our 4Runners have aerodynamic design believe it or not.

Also nobody drives the same - has the same mods - over the same terrain - using the same gas - at the same time of year - maintaining their vehicle and monitoring tire pressure - as anyone else. It is luck if you get the same milage as another poster.
