Duratracs vs ko2

Ok, I edited my post above to include some photos. The dealer had them aired up to 36psi. I didnt know. Regardles, something is not right when this happens. I did change them to 32psi in the front and 30psi in the rear like ralleypoint_1. They got quieter and smoother. I'm going to let the dust settle and drive my Lexus for a while (es300h hybrid for commuting) since there isn't any chance of snow for a while lol.

I am looking hard at Nitto Ridge Grapplers now. Since my 4R is a lease, I may just go with new tires and wheels, store whats on there and then switch them out when I turn it in. I plan on buying a new 4R anyway at the end of the lease.

Oh, checked the depth too. All 4 are at 7 - 8 mm. So basically half at 43k miles.

[MENTION=55129]Flyer[/MENTION] after last weekends snow storm how did the tires hold up? do they do good in the snow just not as good as duratracs? I am running the goodyear wranglers now and they are getting close to replacing (they suck, barely got 2 years out of them). I am leaning towards the KOs in a 275/70/18 size. with the added gobi rack and rooftop tent I need a better/heavier tire.

They are good...among the best pure ATs I have tried...Dynapro RF10 ATM, Destination AT, Bridgestone AT Revo, Michelin LTX M&S (not an AT). All but the last were on the 4Runner. The DuraTrac is simply a better snow tire...no doubt about it. It is almost as good as a pure snow tire (and I have the Blizzaks now).

The DuraTrac gripped through slush and snow better than the KO2, especially in turns. The KO2 beats all the rest of the tires I mentioned and beats EVERY MT I have tried...GY MTR Kevlars, BFG KMs, Nitto Trail Grapplers....that is no surprise.

I'm happy with the KO2s but they do fall behind the sure-footted DuraTracs in the snow. I did slip some on the wet slush when taking turns. My anti-lock brakes kicked in quicker when test-braking in a straight line. Still, they are very manageable when compared to the rest I have tried...just have to slow down and keep braking distances higher.

Oh, the GY Wranglers are pretty subpar tires, in my opinion...especially if you hit loose trails, snow, gravel. You will do much better with the KO2s or the DTs. When my Blizzaks wear out, I'll likely go back to Duratracs and sell them when half worn.

over 75k miles

I have over 75k on my duratracs. I ran Nittos and BFG in the past and the duratracs are not significantly louder. I do 99% of my driving on the road/highway with most of the miles roadtripping. I am more than due for a new set of shoes and I will more than likely go with duratracs again. I have been extremely satisfied with the way they handle. I do take the 4R to discount for rotation every oil change, mainly because I have a 2"lift up front (Bilsteins 5100) w/o UCAs so the tires are not 100% perfectly aligned.

Wow, 75k Miles! That's incredible. I suppose though, at my rate, with 43k and 8mm, I could go another 30 easy. But at what cost? I have adjusted them to 32 psi in the front and 30 psi in the back and today in pouring rain, that had been coming down for hours before I got on the roads, I had the traction control light come on a couple time on surface streets. Not cool! No big deal breaking traction on a start, it's the stopping all of the sudden that scares the heck outta me. In city driving that is inevitable.

I was actually checking out the Nitto Ridge Grapplers shown below. I saw these recently on a F250 Duallie and man they looked nice. Really flat looking. But compared to the Duratrac there aren't as many sipes. They do have a very unique tread block design that looks like it might wear more even and be quieter throughout the life of the tire. This tire has a 50k mile warr like the Duratracs. Impressive. I have read they weigh about the same too. In our sizes.





As I stated previously I have run many different types and brands of tires and another one was Pro Comp. This tire brand gets a bad rap because people think it's all show and no go. I think their rep speaks for itself. I used to have the the Extreme AT version. They wore nicely and lasted to the length of the warr, with minimal noise. Snow traction was not as impressive as the Duratracs. So just out of curiosity I went and took a look at what they have to offer now. Low and behold, something relatively new called the A/T Sport.



Now to me this looks like a Michelin LTX A/T2 on steroids. Look at all the sipes! it is loaded. The sidewalls might not be as dramatic as a Duratrac or a Ridge Grappler but the warr on these is 60k miles and is not prorated. It is for the life of the tire. And they have that 60 day ride assurance. None of the others have that. I think I'm going to investigate these a little more. Maybe even try to find a local dealer to go look at them in person. I think this tire will wear like iron and be much much quieter throughout the life, and it definitely looks like it could provide more traction than the Duratrac in the snow.

Any thoughts guys?

It looks interesting but would love feedback if you or anyone else gets them. I was going to change tires immediately after getting the 4runner as that is what I have always done in the past, but thought I would just wait until November. I am still deciding on which tire to get. Had almost talked myself into going back to Duratracs.

I am going to rotate and try psi changes but the tires probably have less than 20,000 miles on them. I absolutely love the duratracs but the sound I have makes me want to get rid of them if i cant find a solution! I had KO2's on my previous truck and never had a problem but defiantly not a crawler like the tracs!!

I've found they like to be rotated every 3-5k miles. 5k is what I do oil changes at so it's easier to remember, but is the upper limit.

I went against my own advice and neglected to rotate, procrastinated, and mine started cupping and howling very loudly. They let you know when you don't rotate fast enough. Long as you keep them rotated though, I've found they don't get too bad.

My duratracs are on My 2011 Nissan Frontier. I would love to get them on my wife's 4runner but will see how they do with me over time!! I will definitely rotate them again and see if it helps thanks for the input!!

I have been in vehicles with both and I would say the KO 2is definitely quieter

Falken AT3W are snow rated and quieter on the highway then both Durtracs and BFG's that I've had. They are also cheaper. That's my recommendation.

I cant speak for the duratracs or falkens, but I can speak for the KO2s. I have a set in E-rated. so far so good. no extra road noise that I am noticing. the ride is a little rougher and gas mileage does decrease but they look bad A and did very well on the trails I've been on. I went camping over the weekend in a remote area that had some sketchy roads, tires handled it like a champ.

My wife's 2016 has Duratracs and I put the KO2's on my 2017. The more miles that go on the Duratracs the louder they get. They will not be going back on my wife's once they expire...

Personally I think the KO2 and Durtrac tires do not really compare. I think a closer comparison is the KO2 to the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor.
